Tracy Senstock: Protesting shows we agree on the importance of saving our democracy

A very special thank you to the organizers of Greeley’s “No Kings” protest. I was proud to be part of the peaceful protest where Republicans, Independents, and Democrats came together to voice their concerns about President Trump and his administrations’ bypassing our constitutional processes and moving us toward authoritarianism and fascism. I was deeply touched by my Greeley neighbors’ advocacy for our country and for the people. We all clearly love the United States and protesting with representation from all parties shows we agree on the importance of saving our democracy.

One of the presenters shared reminders from our Declaration of Independence written regarding the King of England. This speech was particularly appropriate and included content such as “… That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends (impacting our freedoms), it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it …”

To exemplify, the following actions were identified in our Declaration of Independence that are particularly relevant today:

“He (the King) has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good …” (Closing Congress-approved offices and departments, e.g., creating DOGE and working to close the Department of Education without congressional approval; attacking immigrants and refugees; threatening our Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid; canceling food needed for starving children; voiding critical environmental protections that protect healthy food, clean air, safe water, etc.; stealing land from National Parks; cutting government approved research funding critical to our health; attacking freedom of the press; not supporting unions; etc.).

“He (the King) has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained …” (Trump prevented the bi-partisan act critical to address immigration under President Biden).

“He (the King) has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers …” (see recent “Big Beautiful Bill” where Trump gives himself power to override the judicial system).

“He (the King) has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures …” (the LAPD; LA’s mayor and California’s governor did not consent to the National Guard nor the military).

“For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world …” (tariffs certainly threaten our trade, increase costs for the people, and damage our foreign relations).

“For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury …” (ICE is told to deport people (which has included Americans) without due process — even teens walking to school are being kidnapped by ICE).

We find ourselves with a President who targets and threatens anyone who disagrees with him. He proudly announces that he is targeting “Democratic cities.” Our country is founded on freedom of speech and representation. Diverse perspectives are beautiful and create greater change and insights. It is time to stand up and say, “We the People have opinions and rights”. Our country was founded on freedom — Let Freedom Ring For All.
