Royal Ascot Day 2 tips: Race rundown

On the back of the excitement and drama that came from day one of Royal Ascot 2025, day two has a lot to live up to.

    2:30 Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes – 5f

Only one favourite in the past eight runnings of the Queen Mary Stakes has obliged, but that may be about to be doubled here with ZELAINA.

The daughter of Mehams made a taking impression on debut when winning in the style of a top-class sprinter in the making. She broke well and dominated her rivals from the front, having them in trouble well before the one-furlong pole.

She showed natural speed and was able to maintain her strong pace in the closing stages despite luging to her left in the closing stages. That would have just been pure greenness, and it didn’t stop her from pulling away in the closing stages to win by over two lengths.

That form has yet to be really tested, but given her dominance and the ease with which she won, the sky could be the limit for this exciting filly. Others to take note of are course and distance winner Society Kiss, Love Olivia, and True Love.

    ZELAINA

Trainer: Karl Burke Jockey: James Doyle Form: 1 Age: 2Weight: 9st 2lb

Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes winner: ZELAINA 9/4 with Ladbrokes

    3:05 Group 2 Queen’s Vase – 1m 6f

The Queen’s Vase has been a breeding ground for future top stayers, with Estimate, Leading Light, Stradivarius, Kew Gardens, and most recently, the Gold Cup favourite Illinois, all winning this before going on to bigger and better things.

There are a few this year that look to fit the bill of future top stayers, but the one who has hit the ground running, winning his first two starts, is CARMERS.

The Paddy Twomey-trained runner has a mix of speed and stamina in his pedigree, and he has combined both to win his maiden and a Listed content, both over 1m 5f. He will have no issue with the extra furlong, and given that he seems to be a quirky type who has worn blinkers on both his starts, there is every chance that he is holding a bit for himself. That does looks to be just down to his inexperience, and should he rise to the occasion, he could take a bit of beating here.

Group 2 Queen’s Vase winner: Carmers 5/1 with SBK

3:40 Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes – 1m (Rnd)

The eight fillies and mares that arrive here all have some chance of getting their head in front. However, the one who looks the most interesting based on the form that she showed last season is the Irish classic winner, FALLEN ANGEL.

She was a runaway winner in the Irish 1000 Guineas and backed that up with a second to the superstar filly Porta Fortuna (Soprano finished third) before a creditable fourth in deep ground at Longchamp on Arc weekend. She made her comeback in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury against the colts and ran well for a long way, only for the lack of fitness to take its toll.

Now, on the class drop, with race fitness, along with the application of first-time cheekpieces, it looks as if all the pieces of the puzzle are falling into place. Fallen Angel looks as if she will get an easy time of it on the lead, leaving James Doyle to dictate his own fractions, which could spell trouble for all her rivals. Should she show her best form from last season, Fallen Angel can get back to winning ways.

Trainer: Karl Burke Jockey: James Doyle Form: 8124-6 Age: 4 Weight: 9st 2lb

    4:20 Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes – 1m 2f

Ombudsman lost his unbeaten record at Sandown, but considering that he did himself no favours by over-racing, you can upgrade that performance. On the back of a ‘wow’ performance in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes, See The Fire has been supplemented to take on the boys. She is the most interesting of the two mentioned in a race that will be run at a decent pace.

But even so, Aidan O’Brien’s LOS ANGELES will not lie down easily when he gets to the front. This hugely talented and tough colt looked better than ever when winning both starts this season. He held off Anmaat when looking as if the Owen Burrows colt was going to swoop on by, but Los Angeles was having none of it and held off the challenge. Should Los Angeles be in the lead coming into the final furlong, it will take a monumental effort to pass him.

    LOS ANGELES

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Form: 439-11 Age: 3  Weight: 9st 2lb

Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner: Los Angeles 9/4 with Betfred

    5:00 Royal Hunt Cup – 1m (Str)

When it comes to the Royal Hunt Cup the winning and losing of this is in the hand of the racing gods and the draw. The rule of thumb over the last few years is to go with a runner drawn middle to high. The Liffey fits that bill and is unexposed.

He ran well on his first run for Joseph O’Brien at Naas, and will be primed for this from a favourable draw. The current favourite My Cloud was an easy winner over course and distance in April. However, this will be a totally different test for My Cloud, but he has the talent to rise to the occasion.

However, siding with QIRAT looks the way to go. Even though he has raced ten times in his career, he looks as though he has yet to stop improving, and with that experience comes a more battle-hardened profile. The Juddmonte owned runner has finished runner-up in his last three runs, the latest of which was a narrow loss to Hickory in the Victoria Cup over course and distance.

He has a good profile for the hustle and bustle of the Royal Hunt Cup and looks sure to be involved in the finish off a 3lb higher mark.

    QIRAT

Trainer: Ralph Beckett Jockey: Colin Keane Form: 5122-2 Age: 4 Weight: 9st 8lb

Royal Hunt Cup winner: Qirat 11/1 with BetVictor

    5:35 Kensington Palace Stakes – 1m (Str)

Arolla ran well over 7f in a Listed race at Musselburgh last week, and this lightly raced filly looks well-suited returning to 1m. If this doesn’t come too quickly for her, she has a part to play here.

The same can be said for Miss Information, who looks ready for a crack at 1m, and she can be forgiven for her below-bar effort at Epsom on ground that would have been too soft for her.

However, after a battling win over Arisaig on his comeback, RAINBOWS EDGE looks the one to be with. That win took his career record to three wins from four starts. He did well to win over course and distance last time out, being that he had to barge his way through under hand and heels.

When hitting the front, Rainbows Edge wandered around, but once Arisaig came within a length of the Royal runner, he picked up and went on again. With his extra stamina reserve to call upon, a fast run race will set this up perfectly for the son of Night Of Thunder to pounce late and fast. Rainbows Edge could be the Group horse hiding in a handicap.

    RAINBOWS EDGE

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: William Buick Form: 112-1 Age: 4 Weight: 9st 12lb

5:35 Kensington Palace Stakes winner: Rainbows Edge 7/2 with Ladbrokes

    6:10 Listed Windsor Castle Stakes – 5f

On the back of two wins from three starts, Rouge Legend was a big money buy for Resolute Racing. The Paddy Twomey-trained colt has improved with each run and should be able to put his experience to good use here, but he would be more interesting if drawn higher.

Even though The Rogues Gallery parted ways with Rouge Legend, they may have done so knowing that they have one just as good as, if not better than the former, with the David O’Meara-trained ROGUE SUPREMACY.

Having been sent off at 8/13 for his debut, Rogue Supremacy won as an odds-on favourite should, but it was a win that demonstrated his huge potential. He travelled well on the front end, and once faced with a challenge, the son of St Mark’s Basilica quickly pushed the challenge to the side, picking up to win going away to win by over two lengths.

There is plenty of pace drawn around him, which should give him a nice toe into the race giving him a stalking position. Rogue Supremacy has what it takes to play a big part in an ultra-competitive Windsor Castle.
