Assaults in downtown San Diego: What crime reports show

When it comes to violent crime, or what the FBI calls crimes against persons, the most frequently reported kind is assault.

According to crime data recorded by the San Diego Police Department, crimes reported in two categories – aggravated and simple assault – run about 1,000 per month citywide. The data shows a trend where assaults hit a low each year around February, then climb to a peak during summer.

    So what does the pattern of reported assaults look like in the Downtown News area?

    For the city’s downtown districts (downtown, Balboa Park, Barrio Logan and Greater Golden Hill), here’s what reports look like over the past four years:

    It’s important to note these are both simple assault and aggravated assault reports, so the nature of the events may vary. And these are reported crimes, which is not the same as a conviction.
