Mendocino County’s own Americana singer-songwriter Katharine Cole and the Brittle Season Trio make their premiere appearance at the Willits Community Theatre on Saturday, June 21 at 7 p.m. Cole will perform from her Grammy-nominated 2015 album “Brittle Season”, backed by guitarist Jean-Francois Buy, bassist Anthony Melville and drummer Yvonne Boyd.
Cole says her performance of the album in its entirety provides a cathartic rendition of her personal journey through her break-up after a ten-year relationship. She says she’ll be spicing up the show with some of her personal story in between the songs.
In a career spanning nearly five decades, Cole has performed punk and rock in Hollywood clubs, held court at the Paradise Lounge in San Francisco as a top draw in the Americana circles, produced a country phase through the early 2000s, and then a playful rockabilly vein. Most recently she has returned to her Americana roots, with this introspective set of songs from “Brittle Season”.
“By writing songs that were intensely personal for me,” Cole says, “I realized my music appealed more to people, where they could identify with my experience. The songs hit a cord and provide a look into our common humanity.”
With this album Cole says she had to give herself permission to go further than ever before with her songwriting,. “Writing the fun stuff is fun, but with Brittle Season we’re giving people a real experience.”
