LSU outfielder Chris Stanfield wins inaugural Tony Gwynn Community Service Trophy

Chris Stanfield, a junior outfielder on the Louisiana State baseball team, was the inaugural winner of the Tony Gwynn Community Service Trophy, a college baseball organization announced last week.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association selected Stanfield for the Gwynn Trophy following a vote of NCBWA board members, collegiate baseball coaches and media members, the NCBWA said in a June 13 news release.

University of Northern Colorado catcher and outfielder Tony Castonguay and University of Kansas infielder Michael Brooks were the two other finalists, according to the NCBWA.

The Gwynn Trophy honors collegiate baseball student-athletes who are active in their community and represent their programs with integrity, while excelling in the classroom and on the field. The trophy was named to honor the memory and legacy of former Major League Baseball player Tony Gwynn, a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame who was dedicated to philanthropic causes and to college baseball during his life.

Gwynn played 20 years in the majors with the San Diego Padres. He played college baseball at San Diego State and coached the Aztecs from 2003-14. Gwynn died of cancer at age 54 in 2014.

Stanfield, 21, is in his third year of college baseball and first at LSU. He previously played two seasons for Southeastern Conference rival Auburn. At LSU, Stanfield started his “Be The 1” campaign. He donates $100 to the Miracle League in Baton Rouge for every game where he has an extra-base hit or a stolen base.

The Miracle League is a baseball league for kids, adolescents and adults with disabilities. Miracle League games are played on a custom-designed turf surface to accommodate wheelchairs and other assertive devices.

Stanfield is currently playing with LSU at the Men’s College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. He’s hitting .308 (60 for 195) in 64 games this year with 52 runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples, one home run, 29 RBI and five stolen bases.

Castonguay, 23, who finished his college eligibility this year, was nominated by UNC head baseball coach Mike Anderson and assistant Shane Opitz. They heard about the award from former athletic department director of strategic communications Michael High.

Since Castonguay was in high school, he’s worked with and advocated for people with disabilities. He set up a foundation around called “We Are One Movement”, and Castonguay continues to do work around the foundation’s mission while also donating his time to The Arc of Northeast Colorado.

Castonguay was in the UNC program for two years, including one year off the field as he recovered from injuries sustained as a pedestrian in an October 2022 hit-and-run in Knoxville, Tennessee. Castonguay played at the University of North Carolina Asheville at the time. He went to the University of Kansas in 2020 out of Grandview High School in Aurora.
