American Idol Winner David Archuleta on How Coming Out Has Changed His Music

American Idol Season 7 winner David Archuleta is releasing his first new music in five years. Earthly Delights, an EP, that will drop on Aug. 15 and feature six tracks — including his recent songs “Crème Brulée” and “Can I Call You.”

Then the singer will hit the road for two months on a 19-stop tour starting in Arizona and ending in Pennsylvania.

On a recent visit to NBC's California Live, Archuleta spoke about how coming out has also helped him find his voice as a recording artist as he’s put the emotions of that journey into his music.

“Five years ago was the last time I released an album,” Archuelta told California Live’s Jessica Vilchis. “It was called Therapy Sessions, and it was all in my head. I was so stuck there and so now I just want to get in touch with my body, feel confident in who I am and be flirty, which is something I never had done. I’m a late bloomer.”

Archuleta was only 17 years old when he won American Idol, which was 17 years ago. He came out of the closet about four years ago and this month attended his first Utah Pride Festival event in his home state.

He recalled attending his first Pride event in San Diego. “I was, ‘this is basically how people celebrate the 4th of July in Utah, outside and listening to music and celebrating.’ [I thought] ‘this is so sweet, and you don't have to be afraid of who you are if you're queer or part of the LGBTQ+ community.”

Archuleta recalls how growing up in Utah, he fought most of his life to try and be straight but always failed. He was constantly trying to accept himself and struggled with that.

“You may have been told all your life who you're not supposed to be and I what I've learned is it is OK for me to be who I am,” Archuleta continues. “It's not something I'm supposed to fix. I spent since I was like 11-12 years old trying to fix and keep it down and it just starts bubbling like a volcano. Resentment and bitterness and self-hatred start boiling up. When you say it's OK for me to just love myself, embrace who I am and allow myself to love who I may fall in love with even if they are the same sex, I realized it's a beautiful experience.”

It's also reflected in his new music, “Crème Brulée,” which has already received 5 million streams and has taken him to his “flirty” era.

“I want people to be loose and lighthearted and have fun with music,” Archuleta says.
