We look ahead to this Group E match at the 2025 Club World Cup with our Monterrey vs Inter prediction and preview.
Monterrey vs Inter Stats: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer rates Inter as heavy favourites for this match, with the Serie A side beating Monterrey in 73.1% of pre-match simulations. Internazionale’s only prior FIFA Club World Cup participation (in the previous format) was in 2010 as UEFA Champions League title holders. They won that edition with a 3-0 win over TP Mazembe in the final. Monterrey made five appearances in the previous FIFA Club World Cup format, more than any other Mexican club. Their best finish was third place, in 2012 and 2019.This meeting between Monterrey and Internazionale sees teams from Mexico and Italy face each other for the first time in a competitive fixture, and the Liga MX side will hope to improve on their previous two results against European clubs.
Monterrey’s two prior FIFA Club World Cup matches against European opposition both ended in defeat: 3-1 versus Chelsea in 2012 and 2-1 to Liverpool in 2019.
The Mexicans qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup as winners of the 2021 CONCACAF Champions League. More recently, they were beaten finalists in Liga MX’s 2024 Apertura, losing 3-2 on aggregate to Club América in December’s final, before being halted in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Clausura.
Inter Milan come into this tournament after a disappointing end to 2024-25. Having lost out to Napoli in the Serie A title race, they were demolished 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League final – the heaviest defeat ever suffered in the final of the competition.
Inter also finished as runners-up in the Supercoppa Italiana and were knocked out in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia, meaning they ended a season without a major honour for the first time since 2019-20.
Lautaro Martínez was yet again their major goal threat throughout the campaign, though, with his 22 competitive goals in 2024-25 seeing him finish as Inter’s top scorer for a fourth consecutive season.
The Argentine forward will hope to power his side to FIFA Club World Cup glory for the first time since 2010, back when it was only a seven-team tournament.
