ROCHESTER, N.Y. – As tensions rise between Israel and Iran, some Iranians see potential for change. Ahmad Rivazfar, an Iranian American who has lived in the U.S. for nearly 50 years, shared his perspective.
Rivazfar originally came to the U.S. with dreams of becoming a pilot. He graduated from the University of Tehran and served as a U.S. Naval pilot for more than six years. Rivazfar, who still has family in Iran, initially worried for their safety but now feels hopeful.
“People are celebrating because they don’t want to be behind these people anymore,” Rivazfar said.
Israel’s strikes aim to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities and push for regime change. Iran claims their nuclear program is peaceful. Rivazfar believes this could lead to a better future for Iranians. “There are Iranians there, and they are brilliant, but they were under that regime,” he said. “Now if they come out and everybody works for their country, I think it’s going to be a pretty awesome place to live.”
Rivazfar acknowledged the broader conflict’s impact, particularly in Gaza. “Nobody can forget what Israel is doing to Gaza,” he said. However, he emphasized the positive changes for Iranians. “They really do appreciate the freedom they’re getting from Israel,” he said.
Many Iranians express dissatisfaction with the economy and lack of freedoms. Rivazfar believes the conflict could eventually bring about the change they desire. “I think it will eventually bring it to where we wanted as Iranians,” he said.
