SHOHEI Ohtani is officially returning to the mound.
After over a year of playing as just a designated hitter, Ohtani is returning to pitching on Monday night.
The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar has been a designated hitter ever since tearing his UCL with the Los Angeles Angels.
That injury required a Tommy John surgery that has an especially long recovery time.
The last time Ohtani pitched was on October 23, 2023.
“He’s ready to pitch in a major league game,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
“He let us know that.”
It’s been a year-and-a-half since he last took the mound, and the Dodgers desperately need him to go back to his old pitching ways.
The team’s pitching rotation is devastated with injuries, with some of their biggest acquisitions going down long-term.
Rookie pitcher Roki Sasaki has a shoulder impingement and has no timeline for a retyrn.
Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow, who are making a combined $60 million this season, are both on the 60-day injured list.
Ohtani slotting into the rotation will provide the Dodgers with some much needed relief to deal with those injuries.
It will also allow the Dodgers to carry an extra player, as Ohtani will serve as a DH and pitcher while taking up just one roster spot.
MLB fans are fired up to see one of the best in the game take the mound again, and shared their thoughts on social media.
“This is huge,” one fan said.
“I WILL BE THERE IN ATTENDANCE,” another fan said.
“We’ve been waiting for the 2-way star to play both sides for too long now,” a third fan said.
“Wow! At Last!! Go Shohei!!!!” a fourth fan said.
“OH MY GOD ITS HAPPENING,” a fifth fan said.
Even without pitching, Shohei Ohtani is a top-two player in baseball.
He won the National League MVP last season without getting on the mound once.
Now that he is getting back on the mound, it is going to be hard to deny him the MVP award if he pitches well.
