Coastal Carolina wins CWS opener with clutch late-inning rally vs. Arizona

Coastal Carolina and Arizona opened the College World Series on Friday, and the first game from Omaha did not disappoint. The game was tied until the 8th inning when the Chanticleers eventually took the lead for good in a 7-4 win over the Wildcats.

Both teams produced 2-run frames, with Coastal Carolina striking first in the bottom of the 2nd and Arizona leveling things in the top of the 4th. The two sides later traded runs into a 4-all tie entering the 8th inning.

It was in the bottom of the 8th that the Chanticleers provided the game-changing blow, and they did it all with 2 outs. After 2 quick outs, it was CCU’s Wells Sykes who dropped a picture-perfect double on the right field line.

An intentional walk brought Sebastian Alexander to the plate, and he delivered with a go-ahead bloop into centerfield:

Arizona would go to the bullpen at that point, but it was not enough to stop the barrage. Coastal Carolina’s Blake Barthol punctuated the inning with a 2-run double, putting the Chanticleers in firm control of Game 1.

On the mound, Coastal used Riley Eikhoff and Cameron Flukey to cover 4 innings apiece before turning to Dominick Carbone with a runner on in the top of the 9th. Carbone surrendered a hit to the first batter he faced, setting up 1st and 3rd with no outs, but that was all he would allow. A swift strikeout and game-ending double play sent CCU into the winner’s bracket and Arizona into an elimination game.

Coming into Omaha, CCU carried the 3rd-best College World Series odds, checking in at +310 to win it all. Only Arkansas and LSU held better odds to win the CWS, and fans can track the odds throughout the tournament with the top betting apps around.

With the win, Coastal Carolina moves into a winner’s bracket game on Sunday vs. the winner of Oregon State and Louisville. Meanwhile, Arizona will face the loser of that matchup in a do-or-die elimination game on Sunday afternoon.
