The One Thing You Should Never Do to Your Nails, According to a Celebrity Manicurist

There are so many wonderful nail finishes to choose from—gel, powder, press on nails and of course regular polish, not to mention nail art, tips and wraps. But what about the health of your nails? Do any of these options come with health concerns?

We spoke with celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec about nail trends and nail health to get the lowdown, so that you can enjoy your beautiful manicures without worry.

Kandalec, who has worked with Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain and Connie Britton says you should never, ever "peel your polish, gel, acrylic or press-ons off, or remove them with a tool before giving them enough time to properly soak," Kandalec tells Parade. The absolute minimum is 15 minutes.

When you peel off your gel or press ons, you "can cause months of damage, but it will also cause the next enhancement that you want to apply to not adhere as well as it would to a healthy nail. This causes more lifting, and thus a perpetual cycle of damage that's difficult to get back from," she says.

Can you use mechanical nail drills on natural nails?

Kandalec says manicurist can use mechanical files on natural nails if they are properly trained.

"It took me a year of training or so to use it properly—it’s not something I ever recommend anyone try to DIY." She adds damage from a mechanical file can come from using the wrong bits or at the wrong speed, not the tool itself.

"What's really important to mention is that there are many different types of bits, with different abrasiveness," she says. Diamond bits are the tiny ones, and ceramic bits, which are usually white, that are in a fine grit are safe to be used on natural nails. Sanding bands at a fine grit of 220-400 are safe too, she says, as long as the nail technician keeps it moving on the nail so as not to cause some heat transfer.

What to Know About Mechanical Nail Files

Nail drill bits that should not be used on bare, natural nails are carbide bits, made from carbon and metal. They look like metal and are larger than diamond bits, she says. "Those should be used on a nail enhancement only for removals and rebalances," Kandalec says.

Kandalec encourages people not to be scared of an electric nail file if their manicurist is well-trained. "Most consumers don't know the difference between the bits or that there are so many different types," she says. "If the bit the nail tech is using is extremely gentle, it will give them a stunning result."
