Trent Alexander-Arnold reveals how long he’s been learning Spanish after shock Real Madrid speech

Trent Alexander-Arnold says he’s been learning Spanish for months as he delivered an excellent introductory speech at Real Madrid.

The right-back was officially unveiled at Los Blancos on Thursday after completing a summer move from his boyhood club Liverpool.

Although Alexander-Arnold’s contract at the Reds expired at the end of June, Madrid have still paid around £10million for the defender.

His move was one of the worst-kept secrets in football amid Madrid’s long-term interest in the England international.

And despite being set to play abroad for the first time in his career, Alexander-Arnold has quickly found his feet with a new language.

Standing at a podium during his unveiling, the 26-year-old spoke in Spanish throughout the entirety of his opening speech.

He was later asked about how long he’s been learning the lingo, and replied: “A few months.”

When translated into English, Alexander-Arnold said in his speech: “Good afternoon.

“Thank you Florentino Perez and the club for this opportunity. This doesn’t happen everyday, it’s a dream come true.

“I’m very happy and proud to be here. I want to show Real Madrid fans how I play, I do realise I’m signing for Real Madrid.

“The demands are high, but I’m going to give my all for the team and Real Madrid fans. I want to show those fans how I play.

“I want to win many titles, I want to be a winner here and enjoy playing alongside the best players in the world. Hala Madrid!”

Alexander-Arnold, who will wear Trent and 12 on his shirt, also added: “Very very exciting for me. A day that I have been waiting for a long time now. Very excited, very happy, very proud to be here.

“It’s a dream to be here but there is still a lot of hard work to do and I’m excited to get started straight away. It’s an exciting time for me.”

A large chunk of the Liverpool fanbase were unhappy with Alexander-Arnold’s exit and booed him at Anfield after it was announced.

However, he revealed how he was pleased with the manner of his departure: “Touching on the contrast of emotions, of course, two different ends of the scale.

“Being at Liverpool for so long, experiencing everything I did and what I had was incredible.

“Knowing that it was coming to an end, it was always going to be emotional for me, but I felt like I went out in a way that I’m happy about to be honest.

“The send-off that I got, the way the club treated me, the way the fans were as well was outstanding, I couldn’t say a bad word.

“Also speaking to the players, the manager, the owners, they were all incredible as well, showed a lot of support. It was a huge help, we had an amazing conversation in the last couple of days with the owners.

“They were very warm and welcoming, thanked me for everything I gave and service to the club, wished me well on my future journey and what I wanted to do.

“Said I’d always be welcome back at the club at any point, so to have those words spoken from the club is amazing and like I said, sent off in the perfect way.

“Now, to be here, facing a new challenge, facing something new, a new journey for me, is equally as exciting.

“Very, very excited, over the moon to be here, absolutely over the moon. It’s something that not many players get to experience, so I’m very lucky and very proud to be here.”

Alexander-Arnold could make his Madrid debut on Wednesday in their Club World Cup opener against Al HIlal.

He has been named as one of the defenders in their squad for the tournament alongside fellow new arrival Dean Huijsen.
