Anti-ICE Protests Expand to NYC, Chicago Following LA Curfew

The recent implementation of a curfew in Los Angeles has catalyzed a wave of anti-ICE protests that have rapidly expanded to major cities, including New York City and Chicago. The protests are primarily motivated by opposition to immigration raids and the detention and removal of undocumented migrants . Following the curfew, which was enacted to control escalating unrest, over 300 individuals were arrested in connection with these demonstrations . This situation reflects a growing national discontent regarding immigration policies and practices.

The LA protests erupted almost a week ago after federal ICE agents conducted search warrants at multiple locations.

Protests against Trump’s mass deportations of illegal immigrants have since popped up across the country in cities including New York, Austin, Chicago and Atlanta.

Last weekend, Trump invoked a rarely used law to federalize the National Guard over the objection of Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom and local officials, which further ignited the response.

There are also planned protests in cities including Eugene, Oregon and Raleigh, North Carolina, according to The Washington Post.

While most of the protests in LA have been peaceful, police have made hundreds of arrests. More than 200 people were arrested Tuesday, the Post reported, citing authorities. The vast majority were detained for failing to disperse, but there were 17 others who were accused of violating the curfew that officials placed on the downtown area indefinitely.

Protests over federal immigration enforcement raids and President Donald Trump’s move to mobilize the National Guard and Marines in Los Angeles are spreading nationwide. They are expected to continue overnight and into the weekend.

While many demonstrations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have been peaceful, with marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs, others have led to clashes with police, hundreds of arrests and the use of chemical irritants to disperse crowds.

In cities like New York and Chicago, demonstrators have united under the banner of social justice, emphasizing solidarity with those affected by ICE activities. The protests in these urban centers echo sentiments expressed in Los Angeles, where the curfew aimed at mitigating violence also served as a flashpoint for public dissent against federal immigration enforcement . As this movement gains traction, it underscores the urgent need for policy reform and greater advocacy for human rights within the realm of immigration.
