Few names continue to define the larger news industry than the legendary TV personality, Barbara Walters. Like Walter Cronkite, Larry King or Oprah Winfrey, Walters pioneered the art of the sit-down interview, partaking in hard-hitting televised discussions with everyone from Monica Lewinsky and Fidel Castro to Richard Nixon and Vladimir Putin.
As accomplished as Walters' resume certainly is, a longtime friend of the TV icon has recently spoken about Walters' continued legacy, pointedly stating her belief that The View personality's interviews "haven't aged well."
In a recent interview with People magazine, veteran TV journalist Cynthia McFadden recalled her friend and colleague's impressive tenure in television news, even as she admitted that some of Walters' interviews might have gone a bit too far in some places.
"Some of her interviews haven’t aged well,” McFadden told People with a laugh.
In the new Hulu documentary Barbara Walters Tell Me Everything, McFadden and some of Walters' closest friends highlight several now famous interviews where Walters' blunt interview skills take center stage.
In 1976, for example, the veteran broadcaster asked musician/actor Barbara Streisand, "Why didn’t you have your nose fixed?” In an interview with Martha Stewart, she asked the celebrity chef, "Martha, why do so many people hate you?”
In 2014, Walters went even further, speaking with the Kardashians and framing her interview question by saying, "You don’t act, you don’t sing, you don’t dance, you don’t have any — forgive me — talent."
Recalling many of these now infamous interview moments, McFadden observed, "No one got out of a Barbara interview unscathed.”
In spite of her sometimes uncouth approach to an interview, McFadden and longtime friends and coworkers of the legendary View creator hasn't shied away from highlighting Walters' continued impact on television journalism.
“She asked the questions that nobody else asked,” says Oprah Winfrey in the new Hulu documentary, which is currently slated for release on June 23.
