MTV Legend, 80, Is Unrecognizable Reuniting With Fellow On-Air Icons

If you grew up watching MTV in the '80s and '90s, there was one name you knew you could trust: Kurt Loder.

The respected journalist joined MTV in 1987, following a nine-year stint at Rolling Stone. Kurt Loder was tasked with hosting The Week In Rock (later expanded and rebranded as MTV News). In those days before the internet, MTV News was the source of music news on television for an entire generation of viewers.

With a signature baritone voice and a dry wit, Loder brought an "elder rock statemen" presence to the channel, and he covered everything from band breakups, political campaigns, and generational moments like the tragic death of Kurt Cobain.

Though Loder admitted he lacked "energy" in his on-air delivery ("I don't like to be talked to like that when I'm watching someone on television," he told Rolling Stone), he looked vibrant on June 8 when he posed for a photo with fellow MTV icons, Matt Pinfield and Chris Connelly.

The trio reunited at the birthday party of another MTV icon, Juliette Hohnen (of MTV Europe and MTV News). Loder, who was always clean-shaven when on MTV, sported a gray beard! Connelly—a former MTV on-air reporter and personality, now working at ESPN—also had a head of gray hair. The only one without any gray was Matt, who retained his signature bald look.

"So great to spend time with my MTV brothers, Kurt and Chris, again," Pinfield captioned the photo he posted on Instagram. "Here with my old friends that I love and was so fortunate to work with, these two legends."

For Matt Pinfield, the reunion was extra sweet. In January, the legendary radio personality and former 120 Minutes host suffered a massive stroke that left him unresponsive for two months.

"Multiple medical experts thought there was a strong possibility that I would never speak or walk again," he wrote in an April 28 update. "I still have a lot of work to do, but I'm continuing with my rehabilitation and therapy and continually improving every day."
