Two India Stars Included As Kane Williamson Officially Announces Next Fab Four

Just over a decade ago, four youngsters - Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson - were touted as the 'Fab Four' of cricket. The cricketing fraternity backed them to be the flagbearers for the game, and none of them disappointed.

All four went on to live up to the expectations and have enjoyed legendary careers so far. The superstars of the game are now in the twilight of their illustrious careers. Kohli has already retired from Tests and T20Is, while Smith has brought down the curtains on his illustrious ODI career.

Kane Williamson has not retired from any format but has stepped down as their captain and also declined a central contract for the 2024-25 season.

There is no denying that the famed 'Fab Four' are at the fag end of their glorious careers and the search is on for the next generation of cricket stars who can carry the torch forward.

Kane Williamson on the next Fab Four:

While only time will reveal the future superstars of cricket, Kane Williamson has revealed his pick. The former New Zealand captain has named India's young stars Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal among the players who can dominate the game in the coming years.

"The players that come to mind in terms of multi-format are: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rachin Ravindra, Harry Brook. And also Cam Green. Those are all outstanding players and have shown fantastic moments in all formats. All young and their games are just growing," Kane Williamson told The Cricket Monthly.

The likes of Gill, Jaiswal, and Harry Brook will be in action later this month when the much-awaited five-match series between India and England gets underway. Jaiswal was the highest run-scorer during the Test series between the two teams last year and will look to impress once again.

On the other hand, Gill was the second-highest run-scorer, and he will also be eyeing a good outing. The upcoming series will also mark the beginning of his journey as India's Test captain.

I feel personally grateful that I was brought up in that red-ball era - Kane Williamson

The New Zealand great further spoke on the challenges faced by the current crop of players. He pointed out that while cricketers in the past had the opportunity to play ample red-ball cricket, the T20 format has become predominant now. He also mentioned how playing red-ball cricket enhances a player's game.

"I feel personally grateful that I was brought up in that red-ball era. It’s still there, but I mean the T20 format is so prominent now, where the volume that you play is so high. So the opportunity to bat long, but also the opportunity to really go through those different problem-solving elements in the game [is not there].

"You are playing a game for five days, it challenges you in every aspect, your ability to focus, to be patient, your temperament to adjust a plan… and you can get exposed in a big way in the red-ball game. So you are always trying to problem-solve. And the conditions change a lot more in red-ball cricket. So there’s these elements that you don’t necessarily get, and certainly not [in the same] volume, in the white-ball game, said Kane Williamson.
