Happy Thursday. Don’t forget that Father’s Day is this weekend!

    In today's issue:

Stefanik, Hochul clash at fiery House hearing Trump 'looking forward' to seeing Paul at picnic  NPR, PBS funding at stake in today’s DOGE vote ‘The Pitt’ star spotted on Capitol Hill

    ⏱️ON CAPITOL HILL

It's been a fiery House hearing, let me tell you:

Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) just grilled fellow New Yorker Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) over crimes committed by undocumented migrants in their state.

In what context?: Three high-profile Democratic governors — Hochul, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker — are testifying before a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee today over their states’ status as sanctuaries for immigrants.

From Stefanik: “This is Kathy Hochul’s New York. It’s one of the many reasons why you’re hemorrhaging support from hardworking New York families,” Stefanik said, referencing recent crimes and an executive order signed by Hochul. “They’re horrific crimes that are committed on your watch. You signed this executive order on your first day in office. You signed it again and again this January.”

Why this is particularly notable: This was at a House Oversight Committee hearing. Stefanik is not on that committee but showed up to question Hochul. Hochul is up for reelection in 2026 — and Stefanik is considering her own gubernatorial bid for the job. ? Stefanik at the dais

Plus, Walz and Pritzker have been floated as potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidates.

    Other news from the hearing:

➤House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) also stopped by the hearing, per The Wall Street Journal’s Olivia Beavers, to question Walz. They are both from Minnesota. ? Watch

➤Walz was asked if he ever discussed former President Biden’s cognitive decline with his running mate, former Vice President Harris. “No, not that I can recall,” Walz said.

Timing: This hearing is aptly timed with the Los Angeles immigration protests, though it had been on the calendar for weeks.

➤ ALSO TESTIFYING FOR THE THIRD DAY IN A ROW:

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is on Capitol Hill, testifying for the third day in a row about the budget. ? Livestream

Keep in mind: Hegseth took fire from Republicans during his Senate hearing Wednesday.

Keep your eye on this DOGE vote today:

House Republicans are holding a risky vote today to codify the $9 billion spending cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Why it’s risky: Democrats are all expected to vote “no,” so Republicans don’t have much wiggle room — they can only afford three Republican “no” votes. A number of House Republicans have already voiced their opposition to the bill. Two Republicans told The Hill this week that roughly 10 GOP lawmakers are against it.

What’s on the line?: Spending for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds PBS and NPR.

^ CNN’s Brian Stelter pointed out: “Richard Nixon tried. Ronald Reagan tried. Donald Trump tried during his first term in office. All three Republican presidents wanted to strip taxpayer support for PBS and NPR stations. But all three men were stymied by Congress. This time, however, might be different...”

What time is the vote?: Around 3:15 p.m.

    ?️ NEWS THIS MORNING

    Awful:

An Air India passenger flight headed for London crashed shortly after takeoff this morning. More than 240 people were on board.

The plane had reached an altitude of 625 feet, per The Wall Street Journal, and crashed in a residential area of the Indian city of Ahmedabad.

Who was on board?: Of the passengers and crew members on board, 169 were Indian nationals, 53 were British nationals, one was a Canadian national and seven were Portuguese nationals, according to Air India.

The police commissioner said 204 bodies have been recovered, but first responders are still looking for survivors, per The New York Times.

    ?️ THE SUPREME COURT

    The botched FBI raid:

“The Supreme Court on Thursday revived an Atlanta family’s lawsuit over a botched FBI raid on their home in 2017 but put off deciding its ultimate fate,” reports The Hill’s Ella Lee.

What happens now?: “In a unanimous decision, the justices instead sent the case back to a lower court to take another crack at deciding whether the lawsuit can move forward.”

Backstory: “Federal agents smashed through Trina Martin’s front door in 2017 while executing a search warrant at the wrong address, believing it was the home of an alleged violent gang member. Martin and her boyfriend at the time were startled out of bed with a flash-bang grenade and guns raised, as her 7-year-old son screamed from another room.”

    ? THE WHITE HOUSE

Just now — Trump overturns California EV man

“President Trump moved to overturn California’s electric vehicle (EV) mandate on Thursday, setting off another legal fight with the Golden State,” reports The Hill’s Rachel Frazin.

“Trump signed a congressional resolution that overturns a California state rule that would have phased out the sale of gas powered cars by 2035.”

Keep in mind: “The California rule, and the decision to revoke it, are a massive deal for the auto market. The state makes up about 12 percent of the U.S. population. Its rule has also been adopted by 11 other states and Washington D.C.”

Trump ‘looking forward’ to seeing Paul at picnic:

President Trump said Thursday he plans to see Sen. Raul Paul at the annual White House congressional picnic, after the Kentucky Republican said he was “uninvited.”

Trump’s comments came after Paul said he had planned to attend with his family but was informed Wednesday that he was no longer welcome. Paul — who has been critical of Trump’s spending package — called the snub “incredibly petty” and “immature.”

Paul told reporters: “I’ve just been told that I’ve been uninvited from the picnic; I think I’m the first senator in the history of the United States to be uninvited to the White House picnic. … Every Democrat will be invited, every Republican will be invited, but I will be the only one disallowed to come on the grounds of the White House. … The level of immaturity is beyond words.”

^ Well, Trump says that’s not true!: Trump said that Paul is, in fact, invited to the congressional picnic.

Trump posted on Truth Social: “He’s the toughest vote in the history of the U.S. Senate, but why wouldn’t he be? Besides, it gives me more time to get his Vote on the Great, Big, Beautiful Bill, one of the greatest and most important pieces of legislation ever put before our Senators & Congressmen/women.”

Is it just Paul?: Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who voted “no” on Trump’s legislative agenda last month, also says he was not given tickets to the annual bipartisan picnic.
