Leclerc addresses Ferrari future amidst ‘complicated moment’

Charles Leclerc has unequivocally dismissed any notion of departing Ferrari, despite acknowledging the team's current "complicated moment" in Formula 1.

The Monegasque driver, who is in his seventh season with the Scuderia, remains steadfast in his belief that he can achieve his championship aspirations with the Italian outfit.

Leclerc's tenure at Ferrari has been marked by a protracted title drought for the team, stretching all the way back to 2008. After narrowly missing out on the 2024 drivers' title to McLaren in a dramatic final-race decider, Ferrari entered the current campaign with renewed optimism, and with Leclerc, equally bullish, insisting the Scuderia must target both championships.

However, despite outperforming his seven-time champion teammate Lewis Hamilton, the troubled SF-25 has limited Leclerc to just three podium finishes in nine races.

This has left him trailing championship leader Oscar Piastri by a significant 92 points, while Ferrari now lags a massive 197 points behind reigning champions McLaren.

    Leclerc’s Unwavering Loyalty

Despite these challenges, Leclerc, whose current contract with Ferrari reportedly runs until 2029, has made it clear that a move away from Maranello is not being considered.

When asked by French daily about the possibility of leaving Maranello, the eight-time Grand Prix winner offered a forceful response.

"Of course not, there is absolutely no chance. I believe in the project and I believe in Fred [Vasseur, Team Principal]. Clearly, it’s a complicated moment and in times like this it’s easy to have doubts,” he said.

"But I’m not thinking about leaving Ferrari, I want to win with Ferrari. And I will stay as long as I believe in this project. And I believe in it."

Leclerc's faith extends particularly to team principal Fred Vasseur.

"I’ve always said I have total trust in Fred and I truly believe he is the right person to bring Ferrari back to the top,” he added.

“He really is the one who can make it win. I’ve always said it. I really hope that together we can bring Ferrari back to the top."

Steiner's Perspective on a Potential Move

In contrast to Leclerc's staunch loyalty, former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner suggested that Leclerc should be open to exploring alternative options.

Speaking on the Red Flags podcast, Steiner offered his two cents on the topic.

"He needs a new challenge. I think he’s been there a long time, sometimes change is good like Lewis [Hamilton] left Mercedes to go to Ferrari,” the Italian said.

Steiner drew a parallel to Lewis Hamilton's high-profile move, suggesting that a fresh environment could benefit Leclerc – although the Briton’s transfer to Ferrari has so far not borne fruit.

"I think Charles, it’s like something new because at some stage everything just becomes routine," he added. "He is not in a position to win a championship, so if he maybe goes somewhere else, maybe he gets lucky, you never know."
