If you're worried that you're not crafty or handy enough to do this, know that you are. If you can trace around a mason jar ring and use scissors, you can do this!Start with a milk or juice carton with one of those plastic spouts with the screw-top lid. Rinse and try the carton thoroughly.Grab the metal ring from a mason jar. Center it over the spout and trace around the outside of the ring with a pencil, pen or marker. Using scissors or a craft knife, cut out the circle that you just traced.
Test the fit by placing the cut-out spout inside the ring of the mason jar lid, trimming the circle as needed. You want it to fit snugly and securely, so trim off just a bit at a time. Once you’re happy with the fit, screw the ring with the spout piece onto your mason jar. That’s it!Now you’ve got a reusable, DIY pour spout lid that’s perfect for sugar, sprinkles—or even rice or oats.Related: The Clever Coffee Filter Trick We Wish We’d Known About Sooner
Why This Hack Works—and Where to Use It
This idea is so clever because it solves a common kitchen annoyance using items you already have. It also adds a layer of convenience to the charming look of mason jars, which are popular for everything from storage to serving. This is budget-friendly because it reuses materials you already have, and it's also eco-conscious, giving new life to something that would be tossed in the recycling. It's also practical. In addition to pantry staples, you could also use the jars for candy or chocolate chips—they're perfect for doling out snacks or cookie or cake decorations. Make one for powdered drink mixes or protein powder to simplify meal prep, or take it outside of the kitchen and use the jar to store bird seed in the shed.
If you want to dress yours up even more, you could label the jar with chalkboard stickers, washi tape or a simple Sharpie on masking tape. It makes for a cute countertop display and keeps your dry goods organized and accessible.
This tip is a great reminder that kitchen hacks don’t have to be complicated. This one’s proof that with a little creativity, even something as simple as a milk carton can solve a frustrating problem and make your daily routine smoother.
