The Best Makeup Trick for Hooded Eyes According to Bobbi Brown

Hooded eyes are beautiful—just take a look at Michelle Williams, Maya Erskine and Gabrielle Union. People who were not born with hooded eyes may develop them from weight fluctuations or later in life.

Hooded eyes that are caused by aging are due to skin around the eyes that has naturally lost collagen and elasticity. People may lose a previously-defined crease or develop a fold of skin over the upper eyelid. This can be an eye-makeup challenge—so what is the best way to apply makeup to accentuate the eye?

Makeup artist extraordinaire Bobbi Brown has the solution: "This is a question I get asked all the time," Brown says in a YouTube post. "What I like to do is a medium tone on the eyelid with a dark pencil and mascara."

She uses her Just a Sec eyeshadow in cool taupe or cool brown. "Either will work for any hooded eyes," she says.

Brown's makeup tutorials go further into the technique, and recommend that you apply eyeshadow with the eye open, "so you can see how the overall color application is affecting the shape of the eye."

Next, apply dark eyeliner by pressing in to the roots of the lashes, so you don't see any skin between the lashes. This way, you are placing the eyeliner along the lash line only, and not taking up lid space. Then add a shimmery cream eye shadow or highlighting pencil to the inner corner to open up the eye.

If you want a little more definition, you can add cream eyeshadow into the outer half of the upper lash line and blend. Lastly, apply mascara as close to the lash line as possible.

Natalie Dresher, a New York City-based makeup artist who has worked with Novak Djokovic and Remi Bader, previously told Parade that she recommends matte eyeshadow.

Makeup artist Abigail Quinn agrees—start with an eyeshadow brush and matte shadow (she likes plum) on the outer edge of your lower lash line. Don't line your entire eye, only the outer edge and work upwards towards the eyelid and stop just past the natural crease. Then work your way inwards. This technique gives the eye an instant lift.
