Everton plot double raid on Man City ...Middle East

Everton will hold a crucial recruitment summit this week as they begin planning for life after Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is heading for the exit door after nine years at the club.

The Toffees have an almost unprecedented rebuild to oversee this summer, but bringing in at least one new frontline striker is now their top priority, given Calvert-Lewin is set to depart after contract talks stalled with no breakthrough expected.

Everton’s official position, communicated through a club statement on Monday, is that they are continuing to liaise with both his and Michael Keane’s representatives over a new deal.

We are offering contracts to Seamus Coleman and Idrissa Gana Gueye, while we continue to liaise with representatives of Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

But it is understood that all parties now expect Calvert-Lewin will leave Everton for a fresh challenge when his contract expires at the end of June.

There has been some interest from Nottingham Forest and Manchester United in recent months, while Newcastle United made an approach to sign him last year.

At 28, Calvert-Lewin wants to play European football and would be open to opportunities overseas.

There was a feeling inside Everton that Calvert-Lewin, who was offered a new deal before the Friedkin Group completed their takeover in December, might be edging towards recommitting to the club after his representatives spoke to David Moyes again at the end of April.

But those discussions did not lead to a breakthrough and his exit will quicken the pace of Everton’s summer revolution.

The club are eyeing a huge overhaul of players with Keane also expected to leave.

Everton, though, expect to retain Seamus Coleman and there is more optimism about contract negotiations with Idrissa Gana Gueye, who has been offered a one-year extension.

All eyes will then be on incomings at Everton, with Moyes leading from the front on recruitment while recruitment specialist Nick Hammond – who began working for the club alongside new chief executive Angus Kinnear – also has a central role despite not being a permanent member of staff.

Although there are funds to significantly reshape the squad, The i Paper understands that Everton intend to once again use the loan market – and will likely utilise both of their domestic loans.

The Toffees can also bring in two overseas loans, which they did last season, and are open to doing the same again this summer.

Everton want to get back on the front foot from a recruitment perspective and this week’s meeting is part of that process.

While the club’s position under the profitability and sustainability rules (PSR) is such that signings may have to wait until the next financial year begins in July, work has begun on bringing players in.

Everton made an ambitious pitch to Liam Delap, who opted to move to Chelsea, but his representatives were left impressed by Moyes.

The i Paper understands that Everton are also very keen on Manchester City’s James McAtee, although he has plenty of options both in England and across a host of Bundesliga clubs.

There is also understandable interest in his teammate Jack Grealish, although there remains huge uncertainty about what kind of financial commitments that would require and that is on the backburner until City’s stance becomes clearer.

The Toffees believe their imminent move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium will help them sell a move to new recruits and there is plenty of optimism at the club about the future and what Moyes is building.

Although the turnover of players is unprecedented, Moyes has spoken internally about seeing it as an opportunity.

The i Paper understands that the club have effectively slapped a “not-for-sale” warning on Jarrad Branthwaite after Chelsea expressed tentative interest in the centre-back.

There is also long-standing interest from Newcastle and Tottenham in Branthwaite, who has dropped down the England pecking order, but under new ownership and with no pressing need to sell there is a determination to retain one of their star assets.

Moyes, in particular, has urged the club to resist offers for Branthwaite, who has a contract that extends until 2027.

Everton’s valuation of Branthwaite has always been pegged to the £80m that Manchester United spent on Harry Maguire, which remains the most a Premier League club has spent on a defender.

Having rejected two offers from the Red Devils that fell well below that price last summer, club insiders insist the player’s valuation hasn’t diminished in the last 12 months.
