The Fan-Favorite Musical Andrew Lloyd Webber Has Wanted to Make Into a Movie for 35 Years

Few names have secured as respected a place in Broadway history as Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The prolific composer behind such iconic West End and New York staples as The Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and Starlight Express, Webber's name is as closely attached to New York's theater district as Stephen Sondheim or Rodgers and Hammerstein before him.

As active as the 77-year-old composer has been on Broadway and the West End, however, Webber has also proven himself a fiery creative force in the larger entertainment industry, as seen through the numerous adaptations of his most famed musicals.

While Webber has closely supervised production on past adaptations like 2004's The Phantom of the Opera and 2019's Cats, the legendary musical personality has recently revealed a longtime passion project that has yet to come to fruition.

Speaking at the 78th Tony Awards, Webber said that he's been pursuing a film adaptation based on his cult favorite musical Sunset Boulevard for close to 40 years.

The musical -- which originally premiered in London's Adelphi Theatre in mid 1993 -- has recently made shockwaves with his popular Broadway revival, garnering several Tony Award nominations including Best Revival of a Musical (which it ultimately won).

In spite of its critical acclaim on the Great White Way, however, Webber remains uncertain of whether a Sunset Boulevard adaptation will ever see the light of day.

"We've been hoping to get film made made for Sunset Boulevard now for about 35 years," Webber told reporters with a laugh. "And I'm going to be frank, I mean, there isn't a great rush of people saying they want to make it."

As unsure as he is about the potential for a future Sunset Boulevard film, Webber confirmed the project would be a dream come true for him personally, allowing him to see one of his favorite musicals brought to the big screen.

"I'd love to see it," Webber said of a potential Sunset Boulevard adaptation. "I mean, I really would dearly love to see it."
