A murder mystery set within the walls of a monastery where silence and mistrust reign supreme comes to ITV this week.

A year after launching on Disney +, Shardlake arrives on terrestrial television offering a Tudor take on the classic detective format.

Based on the novels by CJ Sansom, the drama is a 16th-century whodunnit during the dissolution of the monasteries in England with Arthur Hughes as Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer with an acute sense of justice, Sean Bean as the all-powerful Thomas Cromwell and Anthony Boyle as the cocky Jack Barak.

Written by Stephen Butchard, he said: “Although these stories are set in Tudor England, the themes absolutely engage and resonate with today’s world.

“Hundreds of years may have passed but humankind and what makes us tick has changed little.”

The year is 1536, and lawyer Matthew Shardlake finds his life turned upside down after Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s right-hand man, sends him to the remote monastery of Scarnsea to investigate a murder, accompanied by the arrogant assistant Barak.

Set against the backdrop of the dissolution of the monasteries, Shardlake must investigate the death of one of the commissioners who was gathering evidence to close the monastery.

It is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake solves the murder and closes the monastery, and he leaves Shardlake in no doubt that failure is not an option.

Cromwell insists he is accompanied by Barak, whom Shardlake suspects of being a spy for the chief minister.

At Scarnsea, the duo are met with hostility, suspicion and paranoia by the monks who fear for their future and will seemingly stop at nothing to preserve their order.

Arthur Hughes stars as Matthew Shardlake, a lawyer working for Thomas Cromwell, charged with investigating the death of a commissioner at a monastery.

British actor Hughes, 33, is known for his work on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company, playing the title role in Richard III and Richard, Duke of Gloucester in War of the Roses.

He has also starred in The Innocents, Then Barbara Met Alan and The Jetty on television.

Anthony Boyle

Anthony Boyle is Jack Barak, one of Thomas Cromwell’s henchmen.

The Northern Irish actor, 31, rose to prominence for originating the role of Scorpius Malfoy in the West End and Broadway productions of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

He played Geoffrey Bache Smith in the film Tolkien and Kevin Maxwell in Tetris.

On television, he has appeared in Derry Girls, Ordeal By Innocence, Danny Boy and Masters of the Air.

Sean Bean stars as Thomas Cromwell, King Henry VIII’s chief minister.

Veteran actor Bean, 66, began his career with the Royal Shakespeare Company before moving into television roles.

He is famed for his role as Sharpe, based on the Bernard Cromwell novels. He has also starred in Game of Thrones, Missing, Legends, Medici: Masters of Florence and more recently This City is Ours.

On film, he has appeared in Patriot Games, GoldenEye, The Martian and The Lord of the Rings movies.

Ruby Ashbourne Serkis

Ruby Ashbourne Serkis is Alice Fewterer, who works as an assistant in the infirmary at St Donatus Abbey.

Ashbourne Serkis, 26, starred as Rosie in the 2015 adaptation of Laurie Lee’s Cider With Rosie.

She played Lavinia in The Letter for the King, Amy Robsart in Becoming Elizabeth and Celia Wilson in The Serpent.

Shardlake was filmed on location during spring 2023.

Set in Tudor England during Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries, crews travelled to Austria, Hungary and Romania to find the kind of buildings which could conjure up the atmosphere of the time.

Both the medieval Kreuzenstein Castle near Vienna and the gothic Hunedoara Castle in Transylvania were used to recreate St Donatus’s monastery.

When is Shardlake on and how many episodes are there?

Shardlake, which was first released on Disney+ last year, begins on ITV1 on Monday 9 June at 9pm.

There are four hour-long episodes in the series, which will be shown weekly at the same time.

The entire series can also be streamed on ITVX.
