Parents can get checks from $1.5m ‘defect’ settlement with payout per popular item – and you don’t need a receipt

AMERICAN parents and caregivers have just over a day left to claim their share of a $1.5 million settlement.

The money is being handed out by HALO Innovations to settle claims two of the company’s products have a design defect that poses a risk to babies.

HALO Innovations develops and sells sleep products for infants and young children, including blankets, bassinets, soothers and sleepwear.

The Minnesota-based company agreed to a $1.5 million settlement to resolve claims its BassiNest Flex Morning Mist and BassiNest Flex Heather Weave bassinets put babies’ breathing a risk.

The products allegedly have a design defect that causes the sleep surface to tilt.

The lawsuit claims that this puts infants at risk of rolling onto their sides or stomachs, potentially blocking their airways.

The HALO BassiNest settlement benefits consumers who bought either of the two products on or before February 10, 2025.

The plaintiffs argue that HALO was aware of the BassiNest’s tilting issue but failed to issue a recall or warn consumers.

HALO has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay the sum.

Class members can receive to $30 per class product purchased, per household.

    Proof of purchase is required.

Without proof of purchase, members can get up to $10 per class product purchased, per household.

The deadline for submitting a valid claim form is June 10.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is also June 10.

The final approval hearing is scheduled for October 9.

Meanwhile, HP customers have several hours left to claim money from a $4 million settlement.

HP allegedly advertised misleading discounts on its website.

The settlement benefits consumers who bought HP desktop computers, laptops, mice and keyboards at a discount on HP’s website between June 5, 2021, and October 28, 2024.

Each claimant will receive between $10 and $100 depending on the product type and number of products purchased.

For instance, members who bought an HP ENVY Desktop TE020250xt can receive a $100 payment.

To claim the benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by June 9, 2025.

    What is a class-action settlement?

CLASS action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes', a way to band together in court.

These suits are often brought by one or a few people who allege a company or other entity has wronged a large group of people.

When a suit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members”, or people who may have similar complaints to those who filed the suit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue further legal action by accepting money.

These payout agreements frequently include statements by the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination or false advertising are a few examples of what can land a class action on a company’s doorstep.
