MMA legend Ben Askren has been rushed to hospital with ‘severe pneumonia.’
News emerged of Askren’s hospitalisation during UFC 316 on Saturday night as the MMA world sent their prayers to his family.
Reports initially suggested that ‘Funky’ had developed a serious Staph infection, and while that may still be true, Askren’s wife, Amy Askren, has since provided an update on her husband’s health.
“You may have heard that my husband Ben is going through something,” Amy wrote on Facebook.
“He developed severe pneumonia which came on very suddenly. He’s currently in the hospital and unable to respond to anything at this time.
“We welcome all prayers for healing and for peace. We are trying to keep life as normal as possible for our children currently and doing our best to support them thoughtfully so please refrain from discussing it with them for now.”
UFC Hall of Famer Chael Sonnen, who is a good friend of Askren’s, said: “Ben is alive and prayers are wanted. Family choosing privacy at this time.”
This followed a social media post from one of Askren’s ex-wrestling coaches.
“If you follow me I assume you do so for a reason,” he said.
“Ben’s wife Amy gave me information that I didn’t feel right sharing. I personally believe in the power of prayer.
“She does to. He needs our prayers so that’s all I shared. Hope you can understand why I didn’t give more details. Keep praying.”
The MMA world have since come together to send their best wishes to Askren and those close to him.
