The Syrian government has announced the closure of the al-Rukban camp located at the border triangle between Syria, Iraq, and Jordan, coinciding with the departure of the last displaced persons residing there.
Syrian Minister of Information, Hamza Mustafa, stated via his account on “X” today, Saturday, June 7, that with the dismantling of the al-Rukban camp and the return of the displaced, “a tragic and sad chapter of the displacement stories created by the war machine of the fallen regime is closed.”
The al-Rukban camp was not merely a camp; it was a triangle of death that witnessed the cruelty of siege and starvation, where the former regime left people to face their painful fate in the barren desert, according to Mustafa.
He added that with every step towards return, “a great hope sneaks out from among the sands of pain into the hearts of Syrians and their determination to do the impossible to build a new homeland that accommodates everyone.”
Mustafa mentioned that the end of the al-Rukban camp represents the beginning of a new path to dismantle other camps until every displaced person reaches their home.
For his part, the Minister of Emergency and Disaster, Raed al-Saleh, stated via his account on “X” that the closure of the al-Rukban camp signifies the end of one of the harshest humanitarian tragedies faced by Syrian displaced persons.
He added that he hopes this step will mark the beginning of a path to end the suffering of the remaining camps and return their residents to their homes with dignity and safety.
The displacement journey in al-Rukban camp
Bassam Abdullah Suleiman, the head of the local council in the camp, previously told Enab Baladi that 3,000 people had left the camp since the fall of the Assad regime, while about 5,000 people remained waiting for housing for their families after their homes were destroyed by the fallen regime and the Islamic State group.
Many families who resided in the camp visited their villages and original areas after the fall of the Syrian regime but were surprised by the destruction of their homes, whether due to bombing or burning, which made them hesitate before deciding to leave the camp.
According to the head of the local council, moving a family from the camp to outside is a financially burdensome process for the residents and can cost up to ten million Syrian pounds, depending on the distance between the area they want to move to and the camp.
The al-Rukban camp was established in 2014 to shelter more than 70,000 displaced persons from Deir Ezzor, Raqqa, Palmyra, and Homs. It became a gathering point for displaced persons entering Jordan, but after Jordan tightened the entry of Syrians, it turned into a camp lacking the most basic necessities of life, especially after Jordan closed the last medical point supervising it in 2020.
The camp was subjected to a tight siege by the fallen regime’s forces, and the regime intensified its security measures to prevent the entry of medicines and foodstuffs, as well as preventing the Red Crescent from distributing food baskets.
The United Nations reported in a report in February 2019 that a child died every five days in the camp, according to the German website “DW.”
