A Genius Trick for Youthful Hands for Women Over 50

Even if someone looks youthful, you can often tell more about their age by their hands. We often forget to apply sunscreen to the backs of our hands (or it washes off quickly because we're doing stuff).

Beyond appearance, dry, cracked hands can worsen with age as our skin loses moisture. But a certified nutrition coach and holistic chef who goes by Freddie shared a hot tip for what she calls "glass hands" that she posted to TikTok.

"Want to have young looking, beautiful hands your entire life?" she says in the video. "You have to try this miracle whip."

Fortunately the trick is not putting Miracle Whip on your hands—instead it's a combination of shea butter and aloe vera. "The aloe vera makes it so the shea butter isn't so thick," she says. "The aloe vera is what's going to really activate this for your hands."

She puts the mixture on as a hand mask, and shows the lovely results. "Try it!"

But what causes our hands to change so much as we age? “Our skin thins and the fat in the back of our hands diminishes,” hand and cosmetic surgeon Bryan Michelow, M.D., told Parade. “The reduced volume and decreased elasticity produces translucent skin that wrinkles and develops age spots.

Our hands are also exposed to the elements more often than other parts of the body. And all of that handwashing we did during COVID-19 protected our health, but it didn't do the look of our hands any favors. “Frequent washing in hot water removes the natural oils that lubricate our skin and protect against dry and cracked surfaces,” he says.

Clearly, we can't stop washing our hands, so the solution is exfoliating the skin, using suncreen and like Freddie advises, moisturizing regularly. You can also treat age spots at home with lemon juice or with an over-the-counter topical bleach treatment, Dr. Michelow said.
