‘Clutch king’ Tyrese Haliburton laughs in face of ‘overrated’ haters to put Pacers where Reggie Miller couldn’t

Reggie Miller can only dream of being Tyrese Haliburton.

LeBron James and Stephen Curry can’t even get on the court right now, and the biggest names in the NBA have been overtaken by a 25-year-old from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who was traded away by the Sacramento Kings.

    Doubt Haliburton at your peril.

Put the Indiana Pacers in a 15-point fourth-quarter hole in Game 1 of the ‘small-market’ NBA Finals, and the ‘overrated’ star answers with another unbelievable game-winner that electrifies social media and makes Game 2 a near must-win for the league’s current MVP and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“Basketball’s fun,” Haliburton said. “Winning is fun.”

    And deadly.

Haliburton was a Cleveland Cavaliers killer, then became a New York Knicks killer.

On Thursday, he silenced another sold-out arena in America with a 21-foot dagger that was the coldest game-winner since Michael Jordan broke the Utah Jazz‘s heart in Game 1 of the 1997 Finals.

Three of Haliburton’s four playoff classics have sailed through the net with 1.3 seconds or less on the clock.

The fourth literally beat the buzzer.

“We had control of the game for the most part,” said NBA MVP Shea Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored a game-high 38 points but walked off with a numbing loss.

“It’s a 48-minute game. And they teach you that lesson more than anyone else in the league — the hard way.”

Only one athlete in The Association has knocked out No. 1 seed Cleveland and silenced Madison Square Garden in the same postseason.

The same athlete who was recently declared the most ‘overrated’ player in the NBA in an absurd anonymous poll that didn’t have the guts to put real names to paper.

“First of all, Tyrese Haliburton is not an overrated player,” Shaquille O’Neal said on Inside the NBA.

“He’s a great player. He plays the right way.

“All the kids out there – the ones that can’t jump high and don’t have the Steph Curry form – watch him (Haliburton) and steal all that he does.”

The 25-year-old Haliburton endured echoing ‘overrated’ chants in Cleveland, then ended Donovan Mitchell’s season by handing the Pacers a 4-1 triumph in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

“Face of the league,” a fan tweeted.

In the next round, Haliburton paid homage to Reggie Miller with a massive basket inside MSG, then guided the Pacers to a tough 138-105 overtime win over the Knicks in Game 1.

“Give them a lot of credit,” New York guard Jalen Brunson said.

“They closed the game out like they’ve been doing all playoffs. Just not really good on our part.”

Miller is a legend in Indiana, but his Pacers never led the series in a 2000 Finals loss to Kobe Bryant, O’Neal and the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Overrate THAT,” Haliburton recently tweeted, while Indiana bullied Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks with a 4-1 first-round series knockout.

He keeps talking trash, then backing it up by hitting huge shots that no one else in the NBA is making.

“I didn’t know we had beef,” said Haliburton, referring to all the Cavs fans chanting ‘overrated’ at him.

“Good for them. That came out of nowhere. … Now that that label’s there, it’s going to be every time (I) play them.”

The No. 12 overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft has reminded the Bucks, Cavs, Knicks, Thunder and Kings – Haliburton’s original team – about the perils of getting it wrong in pro sports.

“For me, I just control what I can, man,” Haliburton said.

    “And, yeah, overrate that.”

The new face of the Pacers has also learned from his past falls and kept moving forward.

“We spent like a month, 40 days together, and I left with nothing,” said Haliburton, referring to a highly disappointing run for the United States men’s national basketball team that ended with fourth place at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup.

He answered that pain by winning gold in the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Now the Kings castoff is the clutch king of Game 1 of the Finals.

“We don’t give up and we’re battle tested,” Haliburton said. “We just find a way.”
