The Denver Broncos offense has a handful of players who are expected to contribute with Bo Nix this upcoming season, but that former Ducks’ connection between him and Troy Franklin could see more investment in 2025.
Denver Broncos WR Troy Franklin progressing well going into second season
There’s a newfound confidence that is seemingly on display with Denver Broncos second-year wide receiver Troy Franklin. He’s back to wearing his college number, number 11, and the former Ducks standout receiver is looking good early on in OTAs.

Last year, Franklin was buried on the depth chart by Devaughn Vele, Josh Reynolds, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey, so his opportunities weren’t as prevalent early on in the season. After injuries started to impact the Broncos’ WR room, Franklin saw more action, and his long-range speed was a factor that was a threat to opposing defenses.

He and Nix couldn’t quite capitalize on their college connection and chemistry, though in their rookie seasons, Franklin had three drops on the year, with one of them being a long-ball touchdown drop against the Raiders. There were times Nix also missed Franklin, but we finally saw that deep ball connection thrive in the Broncos’ playoff loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Earlier in the season, when Nix and Franklin connected, it wasn’t primarily on the go-ball, but we saw that connection thrive in the short to intermediate passing game. That needs to be more of an emphasis this season by the Broncos offense, and the downfield opportunities with present themself further.
Franklin’s been impressive this offseason and has progressed well, according to Payton.
“You haven’t been able to see all the plays, but there have been a number of explosive plays,” Payton said. “He can run, and I would say a strength of his is ball in hand after the catch. He can run after the catch. He’s doing well.”
With Courtland Sutton and Devaughn Vele appearing to be the two pillars at receiver, it should open up opportunities for Franklin, Marvin Mims, and rookie Pat Bryant to thrive in the rotation.
