What should have been a historic day of celebration turned into an unimaginable tragedy in Bengaluru, as at least 11 fans lost their lives and over 30 others were injured during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. In the aftermath, former India cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal has lashed out at the authorities and called for the families of the deceased to sue RCB and the state government for ₹100 crore in damages.
Chaos at Chinnaswamy after RCB’s 1st IPL title
Following RCB’s maiden IPL title win on June 3 in Ahmedabad, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) hosted a felicitation ceremony at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday. Though a planned parade from Vidhana Soudha was cancelled due to security concerns, thousands still gathered outside the stadium to see their heroes, including Virat Kohli and skipper Rajat Patidar.
However, the crowd, estimated between 2 to 3 lakh, quickly overwhelmed security arrangements. In a desperate bid to control the swelling crowd at Gate No. 3, police resorted to a lathi charge. Panic followed. A deadly stampede ensued, claiming 11 lives and injuring 33 others.
“People will not forget this —or Virat Kohli. While people were dying outside, there was a celebration inside. It’s truly shocking and disheartening. The families of the dead should consider suing RCB and the state government for ₹100 crore for this tragic mishap… BCCI is also shirking responsibility,” former Indian cricketer Madan Lal told IANS.
Government reacts, RCB responds
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the injured and announced ₹10 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased. “This was a major tragedy. People have died in a stampede. Eleven lives have been lost and 33 others are seriously injured. Around 14 people have taken treatment at the outpatient facility. I visited the hospital. Such an incident should never have happened, and the government deeply regrets it. Most of the deceased are young. The government will provide a compensation of ₹10 lakh to the families of those who lost their lives,” the Karnataka CM said in a press conference.
After the events of Wednesday, RCB released a statement. The IPL champions urged their followers to remain safe.
We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us.
RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.
