Our hunch that Bangles members Vicki Peterson and her sister Debbi would perform together at a Los Angeles club date with both playing separately with featured acts on the same bill came to fruition on Tuesday, June 3, with some added bonuses.
It happened at Zebulon where the indie-rock all-star combo the Minus 5 was headlining. Debbi Peterson, 63, recently joined the group and is featured on their newly released album, Oar On, Penelope!

Opening the show was Vicki Peterson, 67, and her husband, John Cowsill, 69, supporting their recently released album, Long After the Fire, which features songs written by John’s late brothers Barry and Bill Cowsill.
Vicki Peterson, on guitar and vocals, dipped into the Bangles catalog first by performing a version of the Prince-penned hit “Manic Monday,” with Cowsill adding some hilarious backing vocals. Not long after, Vicki noted that Debbi was in the house and invited her to the stage to join the musicians that included drummer/bassist Paul Allen.
However, instead of another Bangles hit, the musicians paid tribute to John’s former group, the Cowsills with the Peterson sisters providing vocal support to John on the classic “Hair.” The family band that served as a blueprint for TV’s Partridge Family had a huge hit in 1969 with their version of the song, originally featured on the chart-topping Broadway cast album of the same name.

Following that, the Peterson sisters dipped into the Bangles catalog with a scrappy version of “Walk Like an Egyptian” with Cowsill moving to drums and Allen on bass.
But that wasn’t all. During the Minus 5’s set, Vicki and John were invited up for a rousing version of the Dwight Twilley Band’s barnburner “I'm on Fire,” followed by “Going Down to Liverpool,” another hit by the Bangles that was originally recorded by Katrina and the Waves.
Along with songs from their new album, the Minus 5--which also includes singer-songwriter Scott McCaughey of the Young Fresh Fellows, R.E.M.’s Peter Buck on bass, guitarist Kurt Bloch and drummer Linda Pitmon—did a blistering cover of Neil Young’s “Hitchhiker” and closed out the set with a tender take of Buffalo Springfield’s “Out of My Mind.”
