Hot dogs are a summer staple, but we all know that they can get boring fast. Once you’ve had your fill of grilled backyard dogs in plain buns, you might find yourself searching for a way to bring new life to this classic. In summers past, we've tried hot dog burnt ends and have spiralized our hot dogs (game-changing!), but we're always on the lookout for a new way to fancy up our franks. And we think we just found our hot dog crush for this year via content creator Melissa (melissas_healthykitchen). We love that they're easy to make but also just fancy enough to make you feel like you did something a little special without breaking a sweat. Here's what you need to know.Related: The French Way to Make a Hot Dog 10x Better?? SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter. ??

This isn’t just a “wrap a dog in dough and bake” situation. No, this method flips the whole idea (literally) by starting with cheese underneath the hot dog and topping it with flaky puff pastry before baking. The result is a cheesy, crispy, golden crust on the bottom and top, with juicy hot dog goodness in the middle.
To make these, you'll need puff pastry sheets, hot dogs, cheese slices and an egg. You can include some optional toppings, like sautéed onions, bell peppers, jalapeños, mustard, ketchup or really whatever you love!
Start by slicing the puff pastry into rectangles big enough to fully cover a hot dog. On a lined baking sheet, lay down a slice of cheese. Place the hot dog on top of the cheese, then add another slice of cheese on top of the hot dog.
Cover the stack with your puff pastry rectangle. Using a fork, press down the edges of the puff pastry to help seal everything in. Brush the tops with egg wash for that perfect glossy finish.
Bake according to the instructions on the puff pastry package. Once they’re out of the oven, top with whatever toppings make your hot dog-loving heart sing. The combination of melted cheese, flaky crust and sweet-savory toppings is just incredible!

Why You’ll Want to Make These Hot Dogs All Summer Long—and Beyond
There are a few things that make this recipe a total winner. For one, it’s a crowd-pleaser. Kids love it because it’s essentially a fancy pig-in-a-blanket. Adults love it because it tastes like something you’d pay $14 for at a trendy food truck.
It’s easy to customize. Want to do a spicy version? Add pepper jack cheese and hot sauce. Craving something classic? Stick to cheddar and mustard. You could even go all-out Chicago-style with relish, sport peppers and diced onions.
It’s cheaper than takeout and way more fun! You’re using simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your fridge, and there’s something really satisfying about making something that looks impressive but secretly only took 10 minutes of prep.
Serve these at your next summer gathering and watch how fast they disappear! Or just whip up a couple for an easy weeknight dinner with a side of fruit and chips. Either way, this is your hot dog glow-up moment.
