A SPECIAL tiny home village offers residents lakeside properties with an affordable rent price.
Availability is limited, however, so interested renters must act fast before it’s too late.
Those who already have a mobile tiny home unit, RV, or van, can apply for a space at The Sanctuary Minnesota Tiny House Village this month.
Located in Ogilvie, about 72 miles north of the Twin Cities, the community is operated by couple Bill and Brenda Campbell.
They created the project in 2015 and worked to complete a private stretch of 80 acres of trails and woodland for residents to live together with their tiny homes.
While there are not pre-built structures there, those who already have tiny properties can rent several available spaces on the land.
According to the website’s blog, there could soon be temporary rental units.
Either way, rent for a spot is between $350 and $450 and a minimum of a six-month lease is required.
It includes access to a 15 amp circuit but not sewer or water.
Residents are advised to use their own water containment systems and composting toilets.
THE LODGE
A community area called The Lodge does have full bathrooms and laundry if needed.
It also offers events on yoga, breath work, and personal development.
There are also parking spaces for vehicles within the lots.
Prospective residents should also be aware of some restrictions.
The Sanctuary Minnesota Village is an adults only community, for example.
That means children and dogs are prohibited.
What is a tiny home?
Technically, a tiny home is any house measuring under 400 square feet.
Many tiny homes are built on trailers so they can be towed anywhere, and some are converted from old school buses or vans.
Each state has its own rules about tiny homes, but, generally, they are not subject to the same taxes as regular homes.
However, Alaska, Iowa, Louisiana, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Wisconsin, and West Virginia have made tiny homes illegal as permanent dwellings.
There are exceptions for visiting children and cats that are updated with current vaccinations.
More information can be found through the contact page on The Sanctuary Minnesota Village website.
Similar tiny home communities are starting to pop up around the country.
TEACH AND STAY
Another “affordable” village with rent starting at $825 is being completed in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this year.
It has pre-built tiny homes around 352 square feet specifically for educators in the area.
The project, Wendy’s Village, was a collaborative effort between non-profit land development and human services company We Fortify and the Harrison School District.
Rent was carefully calculated to help consider a teacher’s salary compared to cost-of-living expenses in the area.
Another tiny home community in Salt Lake City, Utah, is also offering rent between $250 and $500 with full-size appliances.
There’s also a “heavenly” village in Florida with rent at $375 and 21 spots right on the water.
