Suspect makes first court appearance in deadly Catawba County mass shooting; authorities say more shooters likely involved

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- A Lenoir man appeared in court Wednesday morning in connection with the deadly mass shooting that claimed one life and injured 11 others during a weekend house party in Catawba County.

Garon Nathaniel Killian, 20, stood before a judge to face new charges stemming from the June 1 shooting, which took place just after midnight at a home on Walnut Acres Drive in the Mountain View community. During his brief court appearance, Killian addressed the court, saying, “I apologize for being involved in this situation.”

Bond was set at $200,000. It remains unclear whether Killian will be able to post bond. Previously, he had been held without bond at the Newton Detention Facility after being charged on Tuesday with a single count of attempted first-degree murder.

Killian is also facing a total of seven counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, as well as charges for going armed to the terror of the public and discharging a firearm in city limits in connection with a previous April incident.

He was released on bond following the April arrest. Despite this June arrest, authorities said their work is far from over.

More shooters believed to be involved

Catawba County Sheriff Brown and the FBI confirmed they believe Killian was not acting alone. Investigators said multiple weapons were used in the shooting, which broke out during a crowded party attended by over 100 people, many of them believed to be high school-aged.

More than 80 shots were fired in what officials describe as a chaotic scene.

The FBI is continuing to offer a $15,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the remaining suspect(s). A secure portal has been created for the public to upload any photos, videos, or tips from the night of the shooting.

Officials are also calling on residents and business owners in the area to check security footage from the evening of May 31 into the early hours of June 1. Areas of interest include:

Anyone with footage or information is asked to contact the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office at 828-464-3112.

    One dead, one still hospitalized

The shooting left Shawn Patrick Hood, 58, of Lenoir dead. Eleven others were injured, some from gunfire and others while trying to flee the scene. The victims range in age from 16 to 57.

As of Wednesday, one victim remains hospitalized. The names of the injured have not been publicly released. Deputies had initially responded to a noise complaint at the party around 11 p.m. Saturday. They spoke to attendees and left the scene, only to be called back less than two hours later when the shooting began.

The FBI confirmed with Queen City News that the house party had been "advertised" on social media, and the shooting started on a hill behind the next-door neighbor’s house.

More than 70 witnesses have been interviewed so far, and the investigation remains active with support from the FBI, NC State Bureau of Investigation, and Hickory Police Department.
