ESPN updated its Football Power Index projections for the 2025 regular season earlier this week.
As part of that update, which featured 13 SEC teams in the top 25, FPI also made projections for how many College Football Playoff berths each conference would produce. The SEC came out far ahead of the Big Ten, ACC and Big 12 when looking at projected CFP bids.
According to FPI, the SEC is projected to have approximately 4.6 College Football Playoff teams in 2025. There’s no shortage of contenders, with programs like Texas, Georgia, Alabama, Texas A&M, Tennessee and LSU all appearing in FPI’s top-12 to start the year. Five additional SEC teams — Ole Miss, Auburn, South Carolina, Oklahoma and Florida — are in FPI’s preseason top-20.
Looking at other conferences, the Big Ten is the closest to the SEC with a projected 2.9 bids. The ACC is expected to earn 1.6 berths while the Big 12 is at 1.2. Independents — likely Notre Dame — account for the remainder.
Last season, it was the Big Ten who led all conferences with 4 CFP bids. The SEC earned 3 a year ago, as programs like Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina just missed out on inclusion into the 12-team field. The ACC also picked up 2 bids a year ago with Clemson and SMU making the cut.
FPI also gives the SEC a 61.4% chance to produce this year’s National Champion, according to the latest update.
