Fans have been left fearing for the safety of some of their favourite wrestling stars after a person stalking Liv Morgan was reportedly arrested.
As a billion-dollar global brand, WWE is the biggest player in the wrestling game and, as such, its performers are major stars in their own right.
Having made household names out of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, John Cena and Batista in recent years, Cody Rhodes, Rhea Ripley and Morgan are just three names who are achieving huge things today with even greater things surely ahead.
With such star power and fame comes cause for concern, however, with wrestlers no exception from the attentions of those who sometimes cross the line in taking things too far.
Sonya Deville is a key example of the frightening world in which top stars can sometimes live in.
Back in August 2020, Phillip Thomas was arrested and charged after breaking into her home and attempting an armed kidnap, subsequently earning himself 15 years in prison.
WWE footed the bill for 24/7 security for her at the time, and the former champion isn’t the only name to have been targeted maliciously.
Wrestler Morgan – also a multi-time former champion and one of the company’s most high-profile athletes – detailed on social media in 2022 the ‘horror’ of someone using her likeness to ‘con’ a genuine fan out of money.
She wrote: “I’ve been sent so many emails of horror stories about people making fake accounts and emails pretending to be me and asking for huge amounts of money.
“This really makes me so sad. Please don’t use my name to con people out of their hard-earned money…”
Morgan went on: “A man sold his home and lost everything thinking he was helping “me”. This has me so sick. Please know I would never reach out to ask any of you for a single penny. I’m so sad. Please stop.”
Tales of wrestlers having to fend off unwanted advances from overexuberant ‘fans’ at airports and other venues are sadly all-too frequent and, following Tuesday night’s WWE event in Orlando, Florida, news of more worrying conduct has been reported.
Ava wrestled briefly in WWE before switching to a role as an authority figureGettyThe company broadcasts its weekly NXT show from its Performance Center facility in the city, which is aired in the UK on Netflix.
This week’s episode saw the dramatic debut of new signing Mariah May, a TNA World Championship bout and another appearance by Ava – daughter of wrestling and acting legend Rock.
Ava serves as the on-screen authority figure for NXT and was present this week to set up a tag team match for the night courtesy of a backstage segment.
Outside the state-of-the-art facility, however, police were reportedly called to intervene and apprehend an individual.
Wrestling podcaster and X user NaJee initially referenced the apparent happening, saying: “A legit Stalker was arrested outside of the PC tonight.
“Multiple bags of evidence taken in by police officers. I wish I was making this up…”
Sonya Deville's terrifying stalking ordeal
Sonya Deville performed at a major WWE show just days after a terrifying stalking ordeal.
She was a former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion and a flyweight in legitimate combat sports, making her one of the company’s most rounded performers.
In 2020 Phillip Thomas entered her home having previously stalked the star online.
Thomas was holding a knife and pepper spray when he came face to face with Berenato, police records say.
After being given personal security by then WWE boss Vince McMahon, the star wrestled at that year’s SummerSlam before taking time away from the ring.
Thomas was later jailed, while Deville later returned to action, staying with WWE until the end of her contract early in 2025.
The arrest claim was later corroborated by noted US outlet Fightful, with reporter Sean Ross Sapp adding in a post the individual: “Had been stalking Liv Morgan.”
He shortly thereafter added: “Liv Morgan’s stalker was arrested. WWE had been made aware of the situation and called in authorities.”
WWE stars not performing on NXT will generally use the Performance Center facility as a training base, but it is not known whether Morgan was at the venue at the time or whether Tuesday’s incident and the catfishing she referenced are in any way connected.
The news understandably worried fans, one posting: “That’s just insane, some people need serious help.”
Another pleaded with WWE bosses: “[Please] protect your superstars. Give them [a] security team. Be strict [with] each fan entering in any WWE.”
A further fan pointed out in response that security was already tight at WWE shows, adding: “They already are strict. I was just at Raw yesterday, everyone had to empty their pockets before they got to their seat.”
WWE’s next big event comes from California’s Intuit Dome as Money in the Bank airs on Saturday night.
