The former ESPN presenter founded groundbreaking show Sport Science.

The revolutionary show aired from 2007 to 2009 and won six Emmy awards.

Brenkus died after a long battle against depression.

In the hours after his death, ESPN SportsCenter hosts sent a touching tribute.

Kelsey Riggs Cuff said, “Brenkus was known for demonstrating scientific principles through sports during his segments and shows.

“Often having professional athletes participate alongside him, John Brenkus was an innovator, an entertainer, and an educator.

“He will be missed by many. He was just 54 years old.”

And a few hours later, Randy Scott also sent a message of his own.

Scott said, “If you watched or consumed ESPN, really in any capacity – from 2007 to 2017, you saw the show that he created and hosted.

“The show won six Sports Emmy Awards.

“And John was uniquely talented and singularly brilliant at not only analyzing sports.

“But then translating sports and science to generations of fans in memorable ways.

    “Because John was memorable.”

He added, “If you’re a loved one, or a friend, or a former co-worker or colleague is suffering, or just needs someone to talk to, call or text 988, using any phone that you can get your hands on.

“You’re not alone. And this world is a better place with you in it.

“This world was a better place with John Brenkus in it.”

Brenkus’ family announced his passing in a statement earlier this week.

It read, “It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Brenkus has passed away.

“John, co-founder of Base Productions, Founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the six-time Emmy award-winning Sport Science had been battling depression.”
