The first capsule that was found by the Shawmut Design and Construction team was the stadium’s original cornerstone.

An Instagram post read: “Demolition at the former McCoy Stadium site, future home of the new Pawtucket High School, uncovered an 85-year-old time capsule in the stadium’s original cornerstone.

“Found by Shawmut Design and Construction, it’ll be unveiled on June 23, 2025, the 44th anniversary of the conclusion of the longest pro baseball game played, which took place at McCoy.

“Crews are continuing to search for a second capsule tied to that historic game.”

Days later, the second item discovered was between the home plate and the pitcher’s mound.

The two capsules will be unveiled on June 23 during the 44th anniversary of the longest professional baseball game of all time.

The record clash occurred between the Pawtucket Red Sox and the Rochester Red Wings in 1981.

The mega match lasted an astonishing 33 innings, with Pawtucket winning 3-2.

The crews found the time capsules with “ground-penetrating radar technology”.

Shawmut’s head of preconstruction for the New England region, Chris Maury, insisted that the crews have taken the most care with the demolition of the stadium.

He said: “The Shawmut team has approached the demolition of McCoy Stadium with the utmost safety and precision, balancing progress with a deep respect for the site’s historic significance and the potential to uncover meaningful artifacts.

“It was an exciting moment for our team to discover, identify, and carefully preserve the capsule found in the stadium’s original cornerstone.”

In 2018, the PawSox announced plans to move to Worcester after failing to reach a deal with the City of Pawtucket to replace McCoy Stadium.

The venue was due to stage its final PawSox season in 2020 but the Covid-19 pandemic ruined those plans.

Originally known as Pawtucket Stadium, the venue was built in 1942 and renamed McCoy Stadium four years later in honor of Pawtucket Mayor Thomas P. McCoy, who died in 1945.
