A former Greeley man faces five counts of wire fraud and six counts of money laundering after police say he and a Parker woman schemed to defraud the Small Business Administration and lenders to obtain emergency COVID-19 relief funds.
Police arrested 46-year-old Robert Crust, formerly of Greeley, on May 21 in Tampa, Florida, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado. Bethany Williams, 44, of Parker faces two counts of wire fraud and one count of money laundering in connection to the alleged scheme, according to the release.
The indictment alleges Crust “made or caused” the submission of intentionally inaccurate loan applications and documents in an effort to fraudulently obtain loans for three Colorado businesses he owned, the office said. He also fabricated documents — including tax forms and a payroll report — to falsely inflate the number of employees and payroll at each business, as well as made “materially false statements” in two loan applications on behalf of one of the businesses, according to the release.
The office said the three businesses received nearly $1 million in loan proceeds — some of which Crust and Williams used for personal expenses including airline travel and hotel accommodations while vacationing in Las Vegas, according to the release. Crust also used loan proceeds to purchase a new BMW, Jaguar and a boat, according to the release.
Both Crust and Williams are set to next appear in U.S. District Court on July 18 for a trial preparation conference, court records show. Both have five-day jury trials slated to begin three days later on July 21. Judge Nina Y. Wang is presiding over the case.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office asks anyone with information about attempted fraud involving COVID-19 to report it to the Department of Justice’s National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721 or online at Justice.Gov/Disaster-Fraud/NCDF-Disaster-Complaint-Form.
