Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) praised Ukraine’s weekend drone attack on Russia, calling that country’s government and armed forces “ever-resourceful” while warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing for more war.
“The ever-resourceful Ukraine used creative drone warfare tactics to successfully attack Russian bombers and military assets used to kill Ukrainian citizens and destroy their country,” Graham said in a post on Twitter on Sunday reacting to the Ukraine attack.
Ukraine hit Russian bases across the vast country in the recent attack, including in the regions of Irkutsk and Amur thousands of miles from the Russian-Ukraine border. The attack came just before new talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey, and without President Trump’s knowledge.
Graham has backed Ukraine throughout its war with Russia and is supporting a major sanctions bill against Russia the Senate is set to consider this week. He has been a voice in Trump’s orbit for tougher steps with Russia.
“Russia indiscriminately kills men, women and children. It’s time for the world to act decisively against Russia’s aggression by holding China and others accountable for buying cheap Russian oil that props up Putin’s war machine. If you want this war to end, push China to help end it,” he wrote on X on Sunday.
Graham recently visited Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ukraine with fellow Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).
With Putin delaying peace talks and Trump showing signs of growing irritation, Graham on Sunday warned it was crucial for western powers to send a unified signal.
In an interview in Paris with the Associated Press, Blumenthal said the sanctions in the bill to be considered by the Senate were “bone-crushing” and would put the Russian economy on a “trade island.”
“What I learned on this trip was he’s preparing for more war,” Graham said of Putin, according to the AP.
“It is crunch time for Putin and for the world because Russia is mounting a new offensive,” he said.
The Senate sanctions bill would seek to make it tougher for other countries to do business with Russia by imposing 500 percent tariffs on those who buy Russian oil, gas and other exports. China and India are two major purchasers of Russian energy.
“The world has a lot of cards to play against Putin,” Graham told the AP. “We’re going to hit China and India for propping up his war machine.”
Graham also offered support for Trump’s efforts to work with Putin, but told the AP “it’s become painfully clear he’s not interested in ending this war.”
