The Denver Broncos are having a wide-open competition at the running back position, and second-year back Audric Estime seems to be under the most pressure to perform this offseason.

After showcasing several flashes here and there during his rookie season, Denver Broncos second-year running back Audric Estime seems to be facing pressure to become the player the team drafted in 2024.

Estime took the field this past Thursday for the first week of Broncos OTAs and worked alongside Jaleel McLaughlin, rookie buzzworthy sensation RJ Harvey, Tyler Badie, and Blake Watson. Denver’s running back room contains plenty of youth, but it seems like Estime will have to make the most of his offseason reps in training camp and the preseason to earn a solidified role.
He was a surprise inactive in the Broncos’ playoff game against the Buffalo Bills, which came as a shock to everybody leading up to kickoff.
Broncos head coach Sean Payton discussed Estime and what the team would like to see from him as he prepares for his second season.
“Year 2 for him,” Payton said. “Just running style and his physicality, the things that got him drafted. The things that we saw. [It was] a little bit harder for him last year—for a handful of these guys. I don’t want to say the grade was incomplete, but they just didn’t have enough [touches]. He’s a back that requires enough touches. He’s going to get those opportunities.”
It sounds like Payton wants him to have an ample sample size, and certainly Estime would benefit from those additional touches — the youth at the position could make that a challenge.
As Payton noted, Estime will get those opportunities, but it sounds like he’ll have to make the most of those opportunities in order to be unquestioned in the rotation. Players like McLaughlin, Harvey, Badie, and Watson are all vying for touches, snaps, and roster spots this upcoming season.
Payton doesn’t believe in the bellcow approach, especially with the number of games played in a season combined with the amount of contact players at that position absord — having several backs is something Payton values.
