Roger Binny to be removed as BCCI president; Replacement finalized

In a recent development, there could be a change in the leadership of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to a report by India Today, Rajeev Shukla is likely to take over as the interim president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, though no official announcement has been made yet.

BCCI president Roger Binny will turn 70 on July 19, 2025. The former World Cup-winning cricketer will no longer be eligible to hold the position, as per the BCCI’s constitution, which follows the National Sports Code. According to the rules, a person ceases to be an office bearer upon attaining the age of 70.

Roger Binny took charge as BCCI President in October 2022, replacing Sourav Ganguly, who had completed his three-year term. At the time of his election, Binny was the sole nominee for the post.

During his tenure, Indian cricket achieved significant milestones. Under his leadership, the national team won two major ICC trophies — the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. The Men in Blue also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup but suffered a heartbreaking loss to Australia.

Binny played a key role in launching the Women’s Premier League (WPL), giving a strong boost to women’s cricket in India. He also prioritized strengthening domestic cricket by introducing better pay structures, incentives, and encouraging senior players to participate in domestic tournaments.

Roger Binny Part of India’s 1983 World Cup-Winning Team

Roger Binny was part of India’s historic 1983 World Cup-winning team, emerging as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker for India with 18 wickets in eight matches. He played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs between 1979 and 1987.

Binny made his Test debut in 1979 against Pakistan and his ODI debut in 1980 against Australia at the MCG. In Tests, he took 47 wickets and scored 830 runs, including five half-centuries. In ODIs, he claimed 77 wickets and scored 629 runs with one half-century.

After retiring in 1987, Binny stayed active in cricket administration, serving as president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association and as a member of the BCCI selection committee. He also coached India’s Under-19 team to victory in the 2000 ICC World Cup.

Rajeev Shukla to Succeed Roger Binny as BCCI President

According to India Today, Rajeev Shukla, the current vice-president and senior-most office-bearer of the BCCI, will act as interim president until new elections are held at the Board’s annual general meeting (AGM) in September. At the AGM, Shukla will be eligible to contest for a full term as BCCI chief.

Shukla has served as BCCI vice-president since late 2020. Prior to this, he was secretary of the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association until 2017 and chaired the Indian Premier League until 2018. Apart from cricket, Shukla is also a Rajya Sabha MP representing the Indian National Congress party.

“As per convention, the senior most office-bearer takes charge in a such a scenario. He (Shukla) will perform that role until fresh elections are held in September,” a BCCI source told PTI.
