Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer has created history in his first season at the helm with the Punjab-based franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Shreyas Iyer has achieved a remarkable milestone that the 5-time IPL-winning skipper MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma could never even dream of in their legendary tenures.

Under the leadership of Iyer, Punjab Kings had one of the best seasons ever in the Indian Premier League in 2025 as they finished at the top of the points table.
Throughout the competition, Punjab Kings played an entertaining brand of cricket, and Iyer led his team from the very front by scoring runs consistently.
Although Punjab Kings faced a crushing loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1, they bounced back strong to beat the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 and register a 5-wicket win.
With this, Punjab Kings sealed a spot in the final of the Indian Premier League against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. IPL will have a new champion this time around as RCB and PBKS have never won the trophy.
The last time Punjab Kings made it to the final was in 2014, and in that match, they suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Shreyas Iyer becomes the first player in the world to achieve this feat
The appearance with the Punjab Kings in the final will be the third time that Iyer will be playing the summit clash as a skipper in the IPL. Before PBKS, he took the Delhi Capitals to the final in 2020 and the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024.
He has become the first IPL captain to lead three different teams to the finals. Iyer made his captaincy debut in the Indian Premier League for Delhi Capitals in the 2018 edition and made a quick impact by taking them to the final in 2020, where they lost to Mumbai Indians.
Then in 2024, he led Kolkata Knight Riders to a victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final of the marquee T20 league. He has become just the fourth captain ever after MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Hardik Pandya to play back-to-back IPL finals and the first captain to play back-to-back finals with two different teams.
Captains to play back-to-back IPL finals:
MS Dhoni – Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) and (2018, 2019)
Rohit Sharma – Mumbai Indians (2019,2020)
Hardik Pandya – Gujarat Titans (2022, 2023)
Shreyas Iyer – Kolkata Knight Riders (2024) and Punjab Kings (2025)
Also, Iyer completed 50 wins as captain following the triumph over the Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 and joined the elite territory featuring MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, and Virat Kohli.
Shreyas Iyer hails uncapped Punjab Kings players
Speaking after the match, Iyer lauded the uncapped players of the Punjab Kings and said that he allows them to play their natural game and be fearless. He said:
"I just let them be, I don't ask too much of them, I love the fearless nature that we bring to the table and also the ideas that they share.
"They would be having a fair set of ideas about how to play that situation. Even though they haven't got that much of experience, they've got the brave nature and on such big occasions, it's important that they gain more experience."
