Bill Belichick buyout: June 1 marks major shift in North Carolina contract

The dawn of June in Chapel Hill means a significantly reduced buyout for North Carolina football head coach Bill Belichick.

Belichick’s contract with the Tar Heels initially had a $10 million buyout should he decide to leave his post. However, Belichick’s contract states that buyout drops to just $1 million on June 1. That means the 73-year-old coach could now walk away at any time with relatively little financial penalty.

Belichick’s contract — and his situation in general — have drawn increased interest in recent weeks due to an off-the-field matter. His relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson has been, at the very least, a distraction during Belichick’s first offseason in charge at UNC.

Most notably, Hudson interrupted a CBS interview Belichick was participating in on multiple occasions earlier this spring. She also reportedly insisted on appearing in a Dunkin’ Donuts Super Bowl commercial alongside Belichick.

The distractions have drifted inside the program as well. While Belichick later denied the report, Pablo Torre said back in May that Hudson had been banned from the North Carolina football facility. Torre stood by his reporting after the denial citing sources at the “highest levels of the football program.”

Torre went on to say he believed there’s still a chance Belichick never coaches a game for UNC because of his buyout decrease on June 1.

“I think there’s a chance, an absolutely real chance that he doesn’t (coach North Carolina’s Week 1 game against TCU),” Torre said earlier this spring. “And the reason I say that is because even before the Jordon Hudson thing became as public, even before it went from messy backstage to now, obviously, messy everywhere, the date that matters the most is June 1st.”

Belichick has only briefly commented on his relationship with Hudson, calling it a “personal relationship” that “doesn’t have anything to do with UNC football.”

North Carolina is scheduled to face TCU in Week 1 on Sept. 1.
