Iga Swiatek continues to prove why she is the Queen of the Clay.
The reigning champion fought from a set and a break down against Elena Rybakina to reach the French Open quarter-finals on Sunday.
After losing eight of the first nine games in the match, Swiatek‘s long winning streak at Roland Garros looked to be ending.
But she incredibly pulled off a comeback and roared on the court as she secured a 1-6 6-3 7-5 victory to maintain her incredible run.
The women’s World No.1 has won four of the last five French Opens, and she has now reached six consecutive quarter-finals.
Swiatek is the first player to do that since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who reached the quarters every year from 1991 to 2000.
And her remarkable form on the clay has seen her now join an exclusive group of tennis superstars.
Swiatek is only the fifth player in the Open Era to win 25+ consecutive singles matches at Roland Garros.
She has equalled female tennis icon Monica Seles on 25 wins in a row, while sitting three behind Bjorn Borg, who has 28.
The women’s record is held by Chris Evert on 29, but sitting 10 clear of her is the best player ever on clay: Rafael Nadal.
Being part of a group with sporting great Nadal, who was honoured before this year’s tournament, shows just how good the Pole is.
And she’s now just three more wins away from another Grand Slam title in Paris to add to her four French Open victories.
Swiatek has equalled tennis legend Seles’ 25-match win streakAFP She has also now joined King of the Clay Nadal in an exclusive groupGettySpeaking after her win over Rybakina, Swiatek compared playing against her opponent to the men’s World No.1.
She told TNT Sports: “Well, it was tough. First set, I felt like I was playing against Jannik Sinner.
“She [Rybakina] really pushed me. I needed to do something to get back into the game – with her playing like that I didn’t have a lot of hope.
“At the end, I was able to play my game, and I am super happy.”
On her performance, she added: “I wouldn’t say perfect. I don’t think I have double-faulted three times in one game. It was not easy.
“We played pretty amazing. It is tough to play here, and it means a lot to win this match and I am through.”
Swiatek is now ready for her sixth straight French Open quarter-finalAFPSwiatek will face Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the French Open quarter-finals as she looks to extend her streak further.
Svitolina beat No.4 seed Jasmine Paolini after saving three match points to book her spot in the last eight.
Looking ahead to that challenge, Swiatek continued: “Elina Svitolina as you can see today, she’s a great fighter.
“She plays every point like it means life or death. We played a great match in Miami this year.
“I’ll focus on myself and I’ll be ready.”
