Denver Broncos vision for Drew Sanders is ‘clear’ in third year

As Drew Sanders prepares for his third season in the NFL, he doesn’t appear to be facing any obstacles after his sophomore year saw him face several ups and downs.

Back in April of last year, Sanders tore his Achilles while working out and missed time all the way up until late October. At the time, Sanders was preparing to be an outside linebacker for the Broncos defense after he made a position switch during the middle of his rookie season, going from off-ball linebacker to the edge.

After he returned from his injury in the middle of last year, the Broncos moved him back to inside linebacker. That amount of change can be frustrating and confusing for a young player who is still adapting to the speed of the NFL compared to college.

Now he can rest easy knowing that he’ll be preparing as an inside linebacker after head coach Sean Payton confirmed that this past Thursday at OTAs, and identifying a clear vision for him.

“The vision is clear,” Payton said. “Inside linebacker. We think he’s a pressure player. So obviously, there’s ways where you can pressure that guy from a stacked position, or to an outside position. He’s doing well handling it.”

Right now, the Broncos are embracing competition at inside linebacker between Sanders, veteran Alex Singleton, and Justin Strnad. Singleton is back on the field after recovering from ACL surgery after Week 3 and Strnad re-signed this offseason during free agency.

With veteran Dre Greenlaw out during OTAs with a quad injury, the Broncos and defensive coordinator Vance Joseph are getting an extended look at those names, plus some of the younger names added in undrafted free agency.

2025 is a big year for Sanders as he looks to get more comfortable on defense and he’ll receive ample opportunity throughout the offseason and training camp to make his case to start this upcoming season.
