San Diego police fatally shot a man Saturday in Ocean Beach after a pursuit.
The shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. in the 4700 block of Bermuda Avenue.
A San Diego County Sheriff’s Office detective said Saturday that officers were sent there “after a man was reported to have been making suicidal threats in the middle of the street,” according to CBS8.
The man fled in a black Mercedes-Benz after officers arrived. During the pursuit, the Mercedes crashed into a black Jeep in an intersection.
The driver of the Mercedes left the car, “pulled a knife out and began threatening officers,” according to CBS8, which cited the sheriff’s office in saying that officers tried using non-lethal tools to de-escalate the situation before the shooting.
Medics took the man to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
No officers were injured, and law enforcement officials have not released the man’s name.
The Sheriff’s office is investigating the officer-involved shooting, as per a 2022 memorandum of understanding to help prevent conflicts of interest within departments.
