Former India National Cricket Team opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has shared his honest views on the young Shubman Gill taking over the captaincy of the Indian Test team.
Shikhar Dhawan said that Shubman Gill is the right man for the job, and he has the ability to take the Indian team forward in the longest format of the game.

Just ahead of the India tour of England, Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket, which forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee to appoint a new captain.
The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant were in the fray for the India Test captaincy, and in the end, the BCCI settled on Shubman Gill as the skipper and Rishabh Pant as his deputy.
Reports claimed that Jasprit Bumrah, who was the Test vice-captain under Rohit Sharma, had himself withdrawn from the captaincy race.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill will have a lot to prove as the skipper in Test cricket, as he has not got good numbers in the format, scoring just 1893 runs in 32 matches at a below-par average of 35.05.
His first challenge as the leader is the five-match Test series against Ben Stokes-led England, which will commence with a game in Leeds on June 20. The second Test will be played at Edgbaston, Birmingham, from July 2–6, and the third Test will be played at Lord’s, London, from July 10–14. Old Trafford, Manchester, will host the fourth Test from July 23–27, and the fifth and final Test will be held at The Oval (Kia Oval), London, from July 31 to August 4.

Shikhar Dhawan said that Shubman Gill has the ability to handle the pressure of Test captaincy and backed him to achieve immense success as the leader.
“I feel it's a great choice. Shubman has performed really well in the IPL recently. He is a great talent and has matured. He’s been playing for the Indian team for several years now.
"I feel he’s the perfect candidate to take on the Test captaincy, and I’m sure he will handle it well and lead the team together. This is the new generation now - Gen Z - and I’m confident he’ll do a great job. All my best wishes to him," Shikhar Dhawan said as quoted by India Today.

Shikhar Dhawan further said that he is supporting the Mumbai Indians to clinch their sixth Indian Premier League title in the ongoing edition of the competition by beating the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the summit clash.
“This time, the IPL has been very exciting. For the finals, my support will be with Mumbai Indians. The Mumbai Indians team is playing really well and they are very balanced. The way they've gained momentum is outstanding, and they are a very strong and well-balanced team. So, I'm with Mumbai Indians,” Shikhar Dhawan added.
Notably, Mumbai Indians recently won the Eliminator against the Gujarat Titans in an excellent fashion and will next take on the Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025.
