Mumbai Indians (MI) pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah refused to listen to head coach Mahela Jayawardene’s instructions during the Eliminator match against Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2025 season. The star fast bowler calmly told his coach to relax, assuring him that he was fully aware of his responsibilities.
Mumbai Indians secured a 20-run victory over Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Friday, May 30. After winning the toss, Mumbai posted a massive total of 228 for 5. In response, Gujarat Titans managed to score 208 for 6 in 20 overs.
Gujarat Titans faced an early blow when Shubman Gill was dismissed in the very first over of their chase. However, Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar steadied the innings by putting together an important 84-run partnership for the third wicket.
While Sudharsan and Sundar were at the crease, Mahela Jayawardene and the entire dugout looked visibly concerned. Jayawardene gave instructions to the players on the field, including Jasprit Bumrah at the boundary.
Jayawardene and batting coach Kieron Pollard approached Bumrah to offer guidance. However, Bumrah appeared calm and told Jayawardene to relax, assuring him that he had the situation under control. He chose to rely on his own instincts rather than the coach’s instructions.
When the incident happened, Jatin Sapru, who was on the Hindi broadcast at that time, said, "Bumrah is basically saying 'Relax, I know my job well. I am here. You stay calm and just give me a chance."

Jasprit Bumrah Delivers Economical Spell in High-Scoring Thriller
Hardik Pandya brought Jasprit Bumrah back into the attack for his third over, the 14th of Gujarat Titans’ chase. As the Mumbai Indians needed a key breakthrough, Bumrah delivered a precise yorker that uprooted Washington Sundar’s stumps.
After Sundar’s dismissal, Sai Sudharsan also fell, and Gujarat Titans collapsed from 151 for 3 to 208 for 6. The Titans finished 20 runs short, ending their IPL 2025 campaign.
In a high-scoring match with over 430 runs scored between the teams, Bumrah impressed with his bowling performance, conceding only 27 runs in his four overs and taking the crucial wicket of Sundar.
He's Got That Genuine Wicket-Taking Ability - Tom Moody on Jasprit Bumrah
Former Australia all-rounder Tom Moody lauded Jasprit Bumrah for his bowling. Speaking on ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut, Moody said that Bumrah's four-over spell is a massive challenge for any batting side. Moody added that Bumrah's ability to take wickets under pressure sets him apart.
"The 24 balls he bowls is such a threat. It is not impossible, but it is so difficult to get big overs against him. You are really playing 20 overs versus 16. He is so far ahead of the rest, it is ridiculous," Moody said.
"With Bumrah, he's got that genuine wicket-taking ability. He's pure class. The yorker he bowled, you just cannot bowl a better ball than that. That is the absolute perfect leg-stump yorker that has gone between Sundar's legs. To a batter that is in and set, you quite often see that with a new batter, but this is a batter that is in. He's going at 200 strike rate," he added.
