Diamondbacks sign reliever Sean Reid-Foley to minor league deal

PHOENIX — As the Arizona Diamondbacks reshuffle their major league bullpen, the organization has signed veteran right-hander Sean Reid-Foley to a minor league deal for depth on Friday.

The Diamondbacks optioned Kevin Ginkel to Triple-A Reno to bring up Jeff Brigham and designated Joe Mantiply for assignment on Friday, as well.

With a bullpen that has reeled for over a month now, the Diamondbacks’ opportunities to find improvements are internal or through the waiver wire, general manager Mike Hazen told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Wednesday.

“The external options are gonna be on the waiver wire, they’re gonna be released players and that’s just the way it goes,” Hazen said. “We sign guys and we send them to Reno and hopefully get them rehabbed a little bit and built up a little bit. Then you get a nice run out of them when they come up here.”

Reid-Foley became available when the New York Mets released him last week. The 29-year-old owns a 2.15 ERA in 31 MLB games over the past two seasons in New York, but injuries have limited his production.

He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and returned in 2023, but shoulder issues cost him time in 2024. This year, he’s made 15 appearances in Triple-A Syracuse with an 8.36 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 14 innings.

Reid-Foley has shown promise with his strikeout numbers, as he has a career K rate of 25.6% in 131.2 innings — league average is 22.2%. Last year with New York, his fastball averaged 95 mph, which he complimented with a changeup and slider. Opponents hit .149 against his fastball last year.

He has also been susceptible to walks at a 14.2% rate in his career. The league average walk rate is 8.2%.

Overall, he owns a career 4.10 ERA in the major leagues between New York and the Toronto Blue Jays. He was at one point considered a consensus top 100 prospect in MLB as a second-round draft pick.

Reid-Foley was assigned to Reno on Friday.
